PhD position - Experimental Study on Jet Multiphase Dynamics of Pelton turbines Mission A PhD position is available in the Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines at EPFL, Switzerland. This position is part of the collaborative project JUMP with Andritz Hydro in Vevey and funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
The project focuses on improving the design and performance of Pelton turbines by studying multiphase flow phenomena in the cut‑out region of Pelton turbine buckets. Experimental research will explore jet impingement, flow separation, multiphase interactions and erosion‑related geometry modifications, with the goal of enhancing power output, efficiency and erosion resistance.
Main duties and responsibilities
Perform original research in hydraulic machinery and experimental fluid dynamics.
Develop and operate laboratory test rigs and measurement systems.
Lead and contribute to publications in scientific journals.
Contribute to general laboratory activities, including teaching assistance and co‑supervision of student projects.
Profile
Strong academic background (MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Energy or closely related disciplines) with excellent records.
Strong interest in hydraulic turbomachines and experimental fluid mechanics.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Enthusiasm, scientific curiosity, eagerness to learn, good organizational skills and rigor in experimental work.
