Intermediate to Senior | Remote in Canada | 6 months, Part-time Term Employee | 20 Hours per Week (Mon-Thur) | Hiring Budget: $32/hr - $40/hr

The Opportunity

We're SimpliCity, a Vancouver-based GovTech startup building technology with purpose. Our core product is a composable content management system (CMS) that unifies municipal digital services, transforming a municipality’s website from a static library into a connected "front door" for the community. We are a small but mighty team that values diversity, curiosity, and the drive to continuously learn and improve.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop test plans and cases: Create and execute test strategies and test cases for our platform and customer project implementations.
  • Manual and automated testing across the lifecycle: You run functional and regression testing within our sprints, plus usability, cross-browser, responsive, and integration (end-to-end flow) testing across websites, web apps, and APIs, to catch issues before our customers do.
  • Testing at every stage: Test incrementally during development, verify release candidates before they ship, and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with customers so high-priority issues are resolved before launch.
  • Test automation and setup: Write and maintain automated test scripts in JavaScript or TypeScript with tools like Playwright (preferred) or Cypress, and you may recommend and set up our testing tools alongside our engineers.
  • AI output validation: Define correct output for our AI content-migration pipeline, judge the quality of AI-generated records against source content, and track which items the pipeline handled versus manual work.
  • Content and migration quality: Check migrated municipal content for accuracy, structure, and metadata quality as we bring new municipalities onto the platform.
  • Web accessibility testing: Ensure customer web projects and our platform meet web accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.2 AA compliance.
  • Defect management: Identify, log, and track defects in Jira, collaborating with leadership, design, and development team members on resolution.
  • Collaborate: Provide clear updates on QA progress and support team members to ensure smooth, quality-focused delivery.

What We’re Looking For

  • A QA professional with 3+ years of experience: You have tested web app and website frontends and backend APIs, both manually and with automation.
  • A process builder: You thrive in ambiguity and enjoy creating solutions and processes where none currently exist. You are motivated by the opportunity to shape the entire QA function.
  • An engineer test automation practitioner: You are proficient with tools like Playwright or Cypress, API testing tools like Postman, and SQL for database checks.
  • Comfortable in a JavaScript stack: You can read our JavaScript, NodeJS, and ReactJS codebase, debug issues, and build small internal testing tools and scripts within it.
  • An accessibility advocate: You know the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 AA+) and have experience testing for compliance, because we work with local governments and inclusive experiences are a core requirement.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and organized: You take pride in catching what others overlook, and you communicate clearly, particularly in writing.
  • A responsible AI collaborator: You are curious about using AI tools to improve testing coverage and quality, and equally comfortable judging AI output with a skeptical, evidence-based eye.

Bonus Skills and Experience

  • Experience testing integrations and embedded third-party systems (for example a form submission and its notifications, or a data feed from a connected system).
  • Experience with performance testing and tools like JMeter and Google Lighthouse.
  • Familiarity with security testing concepts for web applications, APIs, or cloud infrastructure (we may also work with external security partners).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure preferred).
  • Knowledge of or experience with content management systems, particularly headless or composable ones.
  • Relevant certifications such as ISTQB, CSQA, CSTE, or accessibility-related certifications.
  • You have worked on government-related (municipal, provincial, federal) and/or enterprise SaaS projects and products before.

Education & Certifications

  • Academic foundation: University degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience and certifications).
  • Continuous learning: You stay current with QA and accessibility practices and are interested in how AI-augmented tools can improve our testing coverage, code quality, and documentation.

Why Join Us?

  • 4-day workweek and flexibility: Our team typically works Mondays to Thursdays. We provide a flexible work environment where you can shift your hours for an appointment, swap a workday when needed, or balance caretaking and life commitments.
  • Remote-first: Work from anywhere in Canada. If you're in Vancouver, we’d love to get together for the occasional coffee or tea, meal, or working session.
  • Real-world impact: You aren't just moving tickets; you're contributing to building digital infrastructure that helps Canadian communities thrive.
  • Inclusive in every way: We value diversity in all forms: cultures, ages, sexualities, gender identities, neurotypes, and life experiences. We believe that a team with a wide range of thoughts and perspectives builds better products for the diverse communities we serve. We all contribute to creating an environment where everyone feels respected, included, and empowered to bring their whole, authentic self to work. We particularly encourage women and members of other underrepresented groups in tech to apply.
  • No drama and no tech-bro culture: We hire for potential and 'good human' vibes. We treat everyone as autonomous professionals where we value collaboration when it’s needed, but we also trust you to simply get on with your work. Our culture is built on mutual respect for the unique skills each person brings to the table.

Hiring Timeline and Rate

We are looking to hire quickly, therefore this posting will be taken down around 5pm PT on Sun September 13, 2026. We plan to run interviews the week of September 14, and make an offer asap for a preferred start date of October 1, 2026.

We are hiring a part-time term employee for an initial period of 6 months. This position may be extended and/or turned into a permanent role depending on how our company grows and in your interest in continuing to work with us.

You will work part-time of 20 hours per week within our typical team schedule of Mon-Thurs, anywhere between 9am-7pm PT. If you are working outside BC, we need the majority of your daily hours to overlap with our team time. You can choose which hours within that window work best for you (although with our input due to team meetings etc), and some hours outside the core window are also doable.

We are a fully remote team working within Canada (sorry, candidates physically located outside of Canada will not be considered).

Our budget for this role is within the $32/hr to $40/hr range, depending on your skills and strength of your experience.

FYI SimpliCity was spun out from our sister company Radical I/O in 2022. While we operate as a dedicated startup team focused on our composable CMS platform, we share a centralized recruitment platform (and founding team) with Radical I/O.
