The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is recruiting a
Scientific & Medical Advisor
to work in the ESMO Scientific and Medical Division (SMD) under the Chief Medical Officer in scientific, medical and educational projects and to support the development of ESMO Frameworks that set Standards in Oncology.
Main duties and responsibilities The Scientific and Medical Division at ESMO is engaged in a number of medical/scientific and educational activities and implements tasks linked to the core ESMO missions. These tasks and activities are listed below.
ESMO Frameworks
Development and authorship of ESMO Frameworks that set Standards in Oncology;
Scientific oversight and curation of all SMD activities
Living Guidelines and other Guideline adaptations – Medical content adaptation for the Living Guidelines based on the ESMO CPG;
Scientific/medical projects of ESMO Committees and Working Groups;
Involvement in, and support of the activities of ESMO committees and working groups;
Collaborative projects with other peer Societies
Development and monitoring of scientific/medical projects run in collaboration with other scientific or member-based societies;
ESMO Surveys
Development and scientific validation of Surveys;
Project and Research grant Calls
Occasionally writing up application and progress reports in case of ESMO involvement in selected EU and non‑EU research and project grant calls;
The tasks for the organisation of these activities may include:
Communication with experts within and outside ESMO;
Scientific contribution and support in project management in the Scientific and Medical Division;
Interaction and coordination with ESMO staff within and outside SMD, as well as stakeholders: medical and scientific experts, companies and professional societies, research groups, medical journals;
Onsite management and problem solving;
Writing up project summaries and plans;
Travel and active participation in physical/virtual meetings, web educational and scientific events;
Supervision / contacts
Close collaboration with and supervision by the Chief Medical Officer, who will assign priorities, activities and tasks. Interaction with all the Departments within SMD and CMO-supervised interaction with external experts/groups/societies for the participation in scientific, medical and educational projects undertaken.
The duration of the ESMO SM Advisor contract consists of two (2) years, with a trial period of 3 (three) months.
The ESMO SM Advisor will be based in Lugano, Switzerland and will work in the ESMO Headquarters, Via Ginevra 4, Lugano, onsite at least 3 days per week. The SM Advisor may work from home for up to two days per week only upon approval by the CMO, in accordance with the Home Office Policy.
The ESMO SM Advisor will have to organise own accommodation, benefit contributions and health insurance.
Educational and professional experience
Medical Degree from a university recognised by national authorities.
Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training in Medical Oncology within the previous 5–10 years.
Skills
Very good organisational and communication skills;
Able for innovative, structured scientific reasoning;
Capable for scientific interaction/contribution in multiple projects, monitor project progress and meet deadlines;
Organised, self‑motivated and effective team‑player;
Fully competent in use of information technology equipment, web‑based and virtual communication and teleconferencing technologies (email applications, web conference applications);
Fully competent in the use of Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and project management software;
Problem‑solving and “out of the box” attitude;
Past experience, interest for, and ability to develop and author scientific papers, project/grant applications, research projects;
Knowledge and familiarity with ESMO activities, products and processes is an additional optional bonus;
Familiarity with AI, data science, and statistics are not necessary but are highly attractive.
