Overview
In this role you will advance the embedded sensing platform of ax|ReCover, a modular smartphone-based rehabilitation system, turning research prototypes into manufacturable medical devices. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to develop firmware, electronics, sensors, and BLE connectivity, addressing power, reliability and data streaming challenges. The position supports a 16-month Innosuisse project, offering hands-on hardware and software development in neurorehabilitation. This is an impact-driven role at ETH Zurich’s RELab with significant ownership and collaboration across clinical and industry partners.

Verantwortungsbereiche
- Develop embedded firmware for the ax|ReCover platform
- Design, implement and validate sensor acquisition pipelines
- Integrate biomechanical and physiological sensors into embedded systems
- Develop BLE communication between ax|ReCover and the smartphone
- Implement synchronised sensor acquisition and data streaming
- Design and iterate electronic schematics and PCBs for hardware revisions
- Select electronic components and contribute to electronics architecture decisions
- Bring up and validate custom PCBs
- Develop low-level drivers for sensors and peripherals
- Collaborate with research team on electronics integration and prototype development
- Use lab equipment to diagnose hardware and firmware issues
- Optimise power consumption, communication reliability and system performance
- Support electronics testing, validation and design verification
- Help establish engineering processes and documentation for future regulatory development
Zentrale Anforderungen
- MSc or BSc in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Computer Engineering, Robotics or related discipline
- Strong C/C++ programming skills
- Experience with firmware for ARM Cortex-M or similar MCUs
- BLE experience
- Experience with SPI, I2C, UART, ADCs, DMA, interrupts and timers
- Experience designing/iterating custom embedded electronics (schematics/PCB) using KiCad or Altium
- Experience bringing up and debugging PCBs
- Strong electronics knowledge (schematics, sensors, power management, hardware bring-up)
- Proficient with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters)
- Strong debugging across hardware and firmware
- Experience integrating sensors into embedded systems
- Independent, proactive, good communicator in English (German skills valued)
