Offer Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science, and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates, or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For our projects related to atmospheric multiphase chemistry, we are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow .

Your tasks

The properties of aqueous solutions representative of atmospheric aerosol particles are important for many aspects related to their impact on human health, air quality, and climate. In an interdisciplinary project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, we are interested in how transition metals affect photochemical processes of aerosol particles. You will focus on using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron yield X-ray absorption spectroscopy on such solutions to investigate their surface properties. Additionally, you will engage in in situ Scanning X-ray transmission spectromicroscopy (STXM) to address the spatially resolved chemical composition of single aerosol particles as they undergo realistic processing. You will connect your results with thermodynamic modelling and compare them to viscosity and surface tension measurements, as well as kinetic results obtained as part of the overall project.

Your profile

You should have a PhD in physical or environmental chemistry, material science, or a related field. Previous experience with synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopy is expected, including experience with liquid samples. You should bring interest in a detailed understanding of fundamental properties and processes in the context of atmospheric sciences and be motivated to work in an interdisciplinary team.

Additional Information

We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure. Your employment contract is limited to 2 years.
