Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The Department of Prehistoric and Early Historical Archaeology at the Institute of Ancient Studies of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz covers through its main research and teaching areas the period from the earliest evidence of human origins through to the Middle Ages. Close cooperation with the Leibniz Center for Archaeology (LEIZA) provides a research-intensive and interdisciplinary environment, making the department one of the key centres for training and research in prehistoric and early historical archaeology in Germany.
- Teaching commitment of 4 contact hours per week
- Planning and conducting field campaigns and study excursions
- Contributing to the organisation of teaching and research activities
- Participation in ongoing research projects within the department
- Independent research as part of the postdoctoral qualification
- Publication of research results in peer-reviewed academic journals as well as presentation at international conferences.
- A successfully completedscientific university degree
- Above-average doctoral degree in Prehistoric Archaeology, preferably witha research focus on the Neolithic period
- Intention to pursue a habilitation or an equivalent postdoctoral qualification
- Practical experience in archaeological fieldwork, in particular in the planning and execution of survey and excavation campaigns
- Teaching experience in Prehistoric Archaeology
- Very good written and spoken German and English skills (minimum B2 or equivalent level)
- Experience in interdisciplinary working contexts and strong team skills
In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Additional Comments
The position is paid according to EG 13 TV-L and to be filled by 1/6/2027. The position is initially limited to a period of 3 years. An extension of the employment period may be possible.
The position serves the purpose of academic qualification (habilitation).
