The Research Department âLinguisticsâ at the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage (ACDH-CH), an institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), is seeking a researcher in the area of Lexical Variation and Lexical Change .
The position is situated in the context of the OeAW long term project âDictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austriaâ (âWörterbuch der bairischen Mundarten in Ăsterreichâ, WBĂ), which is dedicated to the comprehensive documentation and lexicographic analysis of the various base and regional dialects of (historical) Austria and South Tyrol. Your work will focus on language variation and language change research in Austria, with editing and analysis of the WBĂ material and the comparison of this historical material with contemporary language data being a major focus of your tasks. The WBĂ follows a modern text technological approach in which digital methods and formats (databases, XML/TEI) are of central importance. Basic technical skills and open-mindedness towards the latest developments in the field of digital humanities (especially corpus linguistic methods) are therefore as much part of the requirements profile as sound knowledge in the fields of language variation, sociolinguistics, dialectology, and corpus linguistics (with a system linguistic focus on lexis, grammar, and phonology).
Responsibilities
- Corpus linguistic editing and analysis of data from the âDictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austriaâ (WBĂ)
- Research on language variation and change in Austrian dialects (from the WBĂ to the present)
- Collaboration in preparing and submitting project proposals in the context of research on language variation and change in Austria
- Collaboration in the research department âLinguisticsâ (consisting of postdocs, doctoral students, student assistants, and professors)
- Participation in project meetings (in different constellations and sizes), conventions, conferences, and symposia
Your Profile
- Completed doctorate in German philology / German studies with a main focus on linguistics
- Research focus (verifiable through project experience, publications, etc.) in German linguistics, preferably in the context of variationist linguistics, sociolinguistics, dialectology, language history, corpus linguistics
- Open-mindedness towards the newest developments in the field of digital humanities
- Very good knowledge of German and English
- Teamwork, integration capacity, independence, reliability, ability to work under pressure, flexibility

The initial annual gross salary is ⏠33.250,70 in accordance with the collective agreement for employees of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Based on your experience and academic degree a higher salary is negotiable. The employment will start at the earliest in March 2025 and run for 5 years.
