About the team/job

EMBL is Europe’s life sciences laboratory – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular and cell biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.

The research group of Alba Diz-Muñoz in the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit of EMBL Heidelberg is seeking an experienced software engineer to work on implementing software solutions for processing and analysis of mass spectrometry-based lipidomics data. Our international and enthusiastic team performs high quality research in the areas of cell biology, biophysics, and medicine, with a particular interest in the role of mechanics at the interface between the cell and its surroundings. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists in the lab to implement software for analysing high-content lipidomics datasets.

Your role

  • Develop (cloud-based) software routines for analysis of mass spectrometry-based lipidomics data
  • Collaborate with lab members to improve the performance and extend the utilities of the lipidomic software solutions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software issues in a timely manner

You have

  • A PhD in physics, computer science, or a related field, and several years of professional experience in software development
  • Experience in implementing software solutions for analysis of mass spectrometry-based lipidomic or/and metabolomic data in .raw format
  • Outstanding competence in Python and MongoDB
  • Familiarity with version control tools (Gitlab)
  • Experience collaborating closely with biologists and chemists to develop software solutions for the analysis of complex biological data
  • Solid written and spoken English
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

You might also have

  • Familiarity with chemistry and physics of mass spectrometry
  • Experience with relational database management systems, probability theory, and statistics
  • Knowhow of PHP, Java and MySQL
