Expert – Energy Storage System Solution and Architecture - BESS / Power Electronics / Grid Integration / Energy Systems
We are currently partnered with a global technology and energy solutions organisation developing next-generation energy storage systems and advanced power conversion technologies for utility-scale, commercial & industrial, renewable energy, and emerging high-power applications.
As part of their continued investment in advanced energy infrastructure, they are looking to hire an Expert – Energy Storage System Solution and Architecture to lead the definition and evolution of end-to-end BESS architectures across utility-scale, C&I, renewable co-location, and emerging applications such as AI/HPC data centres.
Key responsibilities
- Analyse future requirements for utility-scale and C&I energy storage applications, including renewable co-location, PV + BESS, AI data centres, large industrial sites, and hybrid behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter systems
- Translate market, application, grid, and technology trends into future system and product requirements
- Research and develop next-generation ESS/BESS architectures covering system topology, battery configuration, DC distribution, power conversion, protection, thermal management, and system-level control
- Define and optimise AC- and DC-coupled energy storage architectures
- Translate grid-side and application requirements into detailed DC-side specifications, including battery configuration, voltage/current ranges, DC/DC topology, PCS sizing, energy-to-power ratio, protection, and control requirements
- Develop reference architectures and system-level technical specifications for future BESS products
- Analyse grid codes and system requirements covering active/reactive power capability, overload behaviour, short-circuit performance, voltage and frequency support, power quality, and grid-forming operation
- Develop coordinated control concepts across batteries, PCS, DC/DC converters, and plant-level controllers
Key requirements
- Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Systems, Energy Systems, Control Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Typically 10+ years of industrial or applied R&D experience in battery energy storage, grid-scale power conversion, power systems, or similarly complex electrical energy technologies
- Demonstrated senior, principal, expert, or technical leadership-level responsibility
- Deep expertise in BESS electrical architecture, power conversion, and grid integration
- Strong system-level understanding of batteries and BMS, DC/DC converters, PCS/inverters, transformers, switchgear, protection, thermal management, automation, and plant-level control
- Proven experience defining complex system architectures, reference architectures, system requirements, subsystem interfaces, and high-level technical specifications
- Ability to translate grid, market, and application requirements into system architectures and component-level technical specifications
- Strong expertise in power electronics and grid-connected energy storage systems
- Strong understanding of grid codes, grid-forming technologies, and coordinated control of complex multi-converter systems
- Significant experience with system modelling and simulation for architecture development and optimisation
