CFD Simulation Engineering
Support needed:
We are seeking an experienced CFD Simulation Engineer to provide end-to-end computational fluid dynamics analysis, with a primary focus on 3D external overall aircraft aerodynamics and aerodynamic load extraction. The ideal subcontractor will take raw geometry through surface cleanup, high-fidelity meshing, solver execution, and pressure mapping for structural handoff.
Scope of Work & Responsibilities:
- CAD Preparation & Meshing:
oClean, simplify, and domain-extend CAD geometry for fluid domain modeling.
oGenerate high-quality surface and volume meshes tailored for aerodynamic boundary layer resolution (y+~1 or appropriate wall treatment).
oPerform mesh independence and sensitivity studies to verify solution accuracy.
- CFD Setup & Simulation Execution:
oConfigure 3D steady-state (RANS) and transient (URANS/DES) aerodynamic simulations.
oSelect and justify appropriate turbulence models (e.g., k-omega SST, Spalart-Allmaras) based on flow regimes.
oRun and monitor convergence for specified operational and aerodynamic load cases.
- Aerodynamic Load Extraction & Post-Processing:
oExtract overall aerodynamic force/moment coefficients (drag, lift, side force, pitching/yawing moments).
oMap localized surface pressure distributions and shear stress profiles across critical components for downstream FEA structural analysis.
oProduce clear visual assets including pressure contours, velocity vector plots, cut planes, and streamlines.
- Documentation & Reporting:
oDocument boundary conditions, solver settings, mesh metrics, and convergence history.
oPrepare a concise technical report summarizing methodology, quantitative findings, and design recommendations.
Scope of Work & Responsibilities
Required Qualifications & Technical Skills:
- Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with industry-standard CFD tools (e.g., Ansys Fluent / CFX, Siemens STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM) and meshing packages (Pointwise, Ansys Fluent Meshing, or native tools).
- Domain Expertise: Solid background in fluid dynamics, boundary layer theory, external aerodynamics, and vortex generation/separation physics
Additional Qualifications & Technical Skills:
- FEA Coupling: Demonstrated experience extracting and formatting CFD pressure distributions for structural finite element analysis.
- Track Record: Proven portfolio of completed aerodynamic load case projects in relevant industries (aerospace, automotive, defense, or heavy machinery).
Deliverables:
1.Mesh & Case Files: Fully set-up, clean geometry, meshed domains, and runnable case/data files.
2.Mapped Load Datasets: Formatted pressure data (CSV/point cloud or solver-native formats) ready for FEA structural transfer.
3.CFD Summary Report: PDF report detailing numerical setup, convergence metrics, aerodynamic coefficients, and contour plots.
Timeline:
Start Date: As soon as possible
Duration: start date - until end of Dec (approx. 100% workload)
Location: 100% Remote (no on-site requirement)
