Fin Ops Engineer

About the Role

Technology spend at TOPdesk is spread across cloud, Saa S, software licensing, on-premises infrastructure, managed services, and shared services.

This role exists to bring transparency, accountability, and financial governance to that environment, helping the business move from reactive cost control to a more proactive, data-led approach.

The remit goes well beyond classic cloud Fin Ops.

You will work across budgeting, forecasting, allocation, showback and chargeback, software asset management, vendor and renewal insight, and optimisation governance.

This is not a reporting-only position: you will own the models behind the numbers, investigate the drivers of spend, and help drive the actions that follow.

You will collaborate closely with Engineering and Finance, using SQL, data pipelines, dashboards, and AI-assisted analysis to examine consumption and billing data, detect anomalies, and support recurring governance workflows.

Recommendations must remain reviewable, with Finance and technology leaders retaining accountability for material decisions.

Early success will mean spend is visible, allocated, reconciled to budget, and easier to forecast with confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own technology budgeting, forecasting, and spend governance across cloud, Saa S, software licensing, infrastructure, and managed services.
  • Track actual spend against budgets, explain variances, and flag financial risks or unexpected increases.
  • Build allocation and transparency models, including showback, chargeback, ownership, tagging, and allocation standards.
  • Create dashboards, reporting, and analytical models that improve visibility into technology consumption and spend.
  • Lead cost-optimisation work across cloud platforms, Saa S, software licensing, and on-premises infrastructure.
  • Manage software asset topics such as licence utilisation, renewals, compliance, and audit readiness.
  • Support vendor reviews, renewal planning, and commercial discussions with financial analysis.
  • Hold regular cost reviews with stakeholders and improve technology financial governance over time.
  • Use Claude and agents to analyse spend, usage, billing, licence, and contract data, and support reviewable optimisation recommendations.
  • Required Skills
  • 3+ years of experience in Fin Ops, IT Financial Management, Technology Asset Management, or Technology Finance.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, analysis, financial reporting, and cost allocation.
  • Good understanding of cloud platforms and cloud pricing models.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to turn data into actionable insight.
  • Hands-on data skills, including SQL or comparable analysis tools, and comfort building repeatable reporting mechanisms rather than one-off spreadsheets.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders across technology and business functions.
  • Clear communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Preferred Skills
  • Fin Ops Certified Practitioner (FOCP) and/or Fin Ops Certified Engineer (FCE).

This role offers scope beyond classic cloud Fin Ops, with responsibility across Saa S, licensing, infrastructure, and managed services.

It suits someone who wants to build the analytical and governance mechanisms behind cost management, not just produce reports.
