Senior Software Engineer

About job:

• We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who builds what they run and runs what they build.
• This is a hands-on generalist role in a multidisciplinary team where everyone owns the whole lifecycle.
• You will ship product features and services, and you will also deploy them, monitor them, carry the pager for them and make them cheaper, safer and more reliable over time.
• Infrastructure, operations and security are not someone else's job here; they are shared work across the team, and you will take your part of it with pride. Expect most of your time to go into building products, with a substantial share on platform, operations and on-call.
• You will work as a peer to our senior engineers, closely with product, design and data science, and directly with our CTO. We are not looking for a specialist who stays in one layer, nor for someone who waits for a ticket.
• We are looking for a curious, collaborative engineer who takes ownership end to end, communicates clearly, and leaves every system they touch in better shape than they found it.

Must have

• Substantial experience (typically 8+ years) building and operating production software,
• with a clear track record of end-to-end ownership from design to production and iteration.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals in at least one of our backend languages (Go, Python, Node.js/Typescript), and the judgement to own and review code critically when much of it is generated with AI.
• Hands-on experience running services on Kubernetes and a major cloud (we are on GCP; equivalent AWS/Azure experience is fine).
• A real DevOps practice: CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, safe rollouts, and infrastructure as code (Terraform, Helm or similar).
• Production experience with on-call, monitoring and alerting, incident investigation, and blameless post-mortems.
• Data-driven decision making: you define metrics before you build, instrument what you ship, and change course based on evidence.
• Excellent communication, with engineers and non-engineers alike. You can explain a trade-off to a product manager or a CEO without diluting it, and you handle disagreement directly and constructively.
• Fluent English. Based in or relocating to Berlin, with at least 3 days/week in the office.
• Existing right to work in Germany required.
  

Strong plus

• We do not expect anyone to bring all of these; depth in any of them helps us a lot.
• Networking and edge: DNS, CDN/WAF (ideally Cloud flare), rate limiting and bot protection, VPCs, private connectivity and firewalls.
• Cloud identity and access: least-privilege IAM, just-in-time elevated access, managing GitHub and cloud organisations.
• Cloud cost optimisation: right-sizing, commitments and reservations, cost anomaly detection, with savings you can point to.
• Security and compliance in practice: SOC 2, ISO 27001 or GDPR controls audits, penetration tests, vulnerability management, and supporting client security questionnaires and RFPs.
• Securing AI-assisted workflows and LLM-based products: prompt injection, agents and coding tools with access to code, data or production, tool and MCP integrations, and AI-generated supply-chain risks.
• Building LLM-based product features: evaluation, guardrails, latency and cost. Observability stacks (Cloud Monitoring, Prometheus, Grafana, Open Telemetry) and defining SLOs and error budgets.
• Experience with low-latency, high-volume services (millisecond budgets, hundreds of millions of requests per month).
• Working alongside data science / ML teams on serving, feature pipelines or experimentation (BigQuery, Vertex AI).
• Working knowledge of TypeScript/React, enough to work confidently across our frontend widget.
• Workplace IT at a fast-moving company: device management, Google Workspace administration, SSO.
• E-commerce, marketplace or retail technology background.
