The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.

Research Assistant Position (f/m/d)

(Ref. 26/15)

in the Research Group “Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing” (Head: Prof. Dr. Volker John) to be filled by October 1, 2026.

This position offers the opportunity for independent scientific research aimed at advancing your own academic qualifications.

Project description

The position is embedded in the Leibniz Research Campus “Multiscale Challenges: from Astrophysics to Climate Models” (Scales), which brings together expertise from astrophysics, climate research, applied mathematics and scientific computing to improve the modelling of complex processes across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Situated at the interface of applied mathematics, scientific computing, machine learning and astrophysical fluid dynamics, the project offers an interdisciplinary environment where close collaboration with the participating research groups is explicitly encouraged.

We are looking for a highly motivated post‑doctoral researcher with an outstanding PhD in applied mathematics or a closely related field. Proven competence in the analysis and/or numerics of partial differential equations, documented by relevant publications, is required.

The appointment focuses on mathematical modelling, analysis and numerical simulation of flow and multiscale systems. Experience in one or more of the following areas is advantageous:

  • Structure‑preserving numerical methods for partial differential equations, in particular finite‑element methods,
  • Compressible flows, conservation laws, or related problems in continuum mechanics,
  • Mathematical modelling and analysis of thermodynamically consistent or multiphysical systems involving multiple spatial and temporal scales,

An interest in machine‑learning techniques for PDEs and scientific computing is expected; prior experience is desirable but not mandatory. Familiarity with continuum‑mechanics topics—e.g., fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics or electrodynamics—and an interest in multiscale methods are also considered assets.

What we offer

  • WIAS Berlin is a premier research institution known for its strength in partial differential equations, mathematical modeling, nonlinear optimization, and applied mathematics in general.
  • Payment according to the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD Bund) including the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, state pension plan); subsidy for the public transport company ticket.
  • Mobile work.
  • A certified (Audit berufundfamilie) family‑friendly work environment.
  • The successful candidate will receive careful mentorship both from the supervisor and from other peers through a dedicated mentorship program.
  • Berlin is one of the most culture‑rich and diverse international cities in the world. It offers endless opportunities to enjoy life outside work, while being very affordable compared to other major cities. Neither the job nor living in Berlin requires German language (although WIAS offers free German courses). We highly welcome international applications. Scientifically, Berlin offers a rich landscape with numerous opportunities for research, as well as job prospects in academia and industry.

Any subject specific inquiries should be addressed to Prof. Dr. Volker John (john@wias-berlin.de) or Dr. Matthias Liero (liero@wias-berlin.de).

The position is remunerated according to TVöD Bund and the successful candidate will be fully employed (39 hours per week) at WIAS for an initial period of four years.

In view of our goal to increase the proportion of women in science, applications from qualified female candidates are especially welcome. Candidates with severe disabilities will be given preference, provided their qualifications are comparable.

How to apply

Please upload your complete application package (including cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates and a copy of your dissertation) via our applicant portal as soon as possible by clicking the “Apply Online” button.

The application deadline is August 10, 2026.

We are looking forward to your application!
