Who We Are At the Institute of Parasitology and Tropical Veterinary Medicine, a postdoctoral researcher position is available within an international research project aimed at developing innovative in vitro methods for the study of ticks and tick-borne pathogens. The project focuses on the development of artificial tick feeding systems, novel screening approaches for the identification of acaricides, and in vitro models to investigate the transmission of tick-borne pathogens.

Job Description

Independently conduct a research project focused on the development and optimization of artificial tick feeding systems. Develop, establish, and validate in vitro models for investigating the transmission of tick-borne pathogens. Perform molecular, microbiological, and parasitological analyses, including qPCR, cell culture, and microbiological assays. Plan, conduct, and analyze scientific experiments, including statistical evaluation of experimental data. Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications and project reports. Collaborate closely with national and international academic and industrial project partners.

Requirements

  • Completed university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Biotechnology, or a related life sciences discipline.
  • Completed doctoral degree (PhD, Dr. med. vet., Dr. rer. nat., or equivalent) in a relevant field.

(Professional) Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in planning and conducting scientific research projects.
  • Practical experience with molecular biology techniques and cell culture methods.
  • Experience in the analysis of scientific data and the preparation of scientific publications in English.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Desirable

  • Research experience in parasitology, vector biology, microbiology, infectious disease biology, or a related field.
  • Experience working with ticks or other hematophagous (blood-feeding) arthropods. Knowledge of artificial feeding systems, vector-host-pathogen interactions, and/or in vitro infection models. Experience with statistical data analysis (e.g., using R) and/or bioinformatics.
  • Strong interest in developing innovative in vitro methods and artificial tick feeding systems in accordance with the 3Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement). Ability to work independently in a structured and organized manner, while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary research team. Good command of German or a willingness to acquire German language skills within a reasonable timeframe.
