The Scope

To effectively meet the challenge of protecting the world\’s forests, we are committed to having the most skilled people working with us. We are currently looking for an engaged Legal Officer to join our Legal Department.

The energetic and eager team of the Legal Department supports all legal and compliance aspects of the FSC Group and advises FSC management and its specialized units in their daily operations. The overall scope covers various law fields including contract and commercial law, data protection, not-for-profit, private international law, labor, antitrust and competition, intellectual property, corporate, tax, IT, tenancy, insurance, public, and environmental law. You will work closely with the administrative assistant of FSC\’s legal team, serving as the hub of legal administration, especially in contract management, and support all legal counsels in their business affairs.

Main Roles & Responsibilities

You are a generalist with a particular interest in contract management and an international orientation. You can support a variety of legal and administrative matters in close cooperation with other legal team members and report directly to the Senior Legal Counsel under the FSC Group Head of the Legal Department. You are confident in collaborating with different stakeholders to achieve practical, efficient, and service-oriented solutions.

The responsibilities and tasks as Legal Officer include:

  • Drafting, reviewing, proofreading, negotiating, and co-approving various contracts for the FSC Group.
  • Supporting the filing of legal documents (contracts, correspondence, assessments, certificates, policies, notes, etc.), maintaining databases, and creating institutional memory for the Legal Department.
  • Supporting FSC\’s contract lifecycle management system, connected processes, and team meetings. Responding to various requests related to contracts or connected projects.
  • Supporting the procurement of legal services by:
  • Responding to internal requests for legal services;
  • Conducting RFQ (request for quotation) and RFP (request for proposal) processes, including review, negotiation, reporting, and alignment with legal and finance teams;
  • Serving as the liaison between FSC\’s procurement team and the legal team;
  • Answering questions concerning procurement policies and procedures related to legal services.
  • Checking and processing invoices.
  • Collaborating with internal and external clients and preparing related legal documents.
  • Preparing and delivering training on internal legal procedures to staff.
  • Preparing legal assessment reports and conducting research activities.
  • Substituting for other members of the Legal Department and supporting individual projects as assigned.
  • Your profile

    • University degree in law. For lawyers educated in Germany: Minimum First State Examination or a Master\’s degree from a reputable University of Applied Sciences.
    • Professional experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm or in-house legal department of an international organization is strongly preferred but not mandatory.
    • Experience dealing with authorities, clients, courts, and law firms is a plus.
    • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required, as it is the daily working language of FSC\’s Legal Department. Knowledge of German, Spanish, and/or French is a strong advantage.
    • Quick cognitive ability and good time management skills, with the capacity to handle multiple functions simultaneously.
    • Service-oriented attitude, focusing on solving legal challenges with diligence, accuracy, and pragmatism.
    • Proven ability to plan and organize work proactively. Experience in project management is a plus.
    • Proficiency in standard software packages, particularly MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with Dynamics 365, MS SharePoint, MS Visio, and MS Project is helpful.
    • Experience with contract databases such as DocuSign CLM and other knowledge management platforms is an asset.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a multicultural, interdisciplinary, and multilingual team.
    • Strong motivation and dedication to support FSC\’s values and mission through excellent performance and integrity.

    The Fine Print

    • Location: Bonn, Germany – FSC International headquarters.
    • Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/week, hybrid work arrangement.
    • Contract Duration: 2-year contract with the intention to extend to an open-ended contract.
    • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
