Electrical Engineer (m/f/d) for High Heat Flux Test Facility GLADIS

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) is one of the world''s leading centers for fusion research. With around 1100 dedicated employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald, we are committed to exploring the fundamental principles of fusion power plants. These power plants generate energy without climate-damaging emissions, are safe, sustainable and nearly limitless – just like the sun.

At the IPP site in Garching we are conducting research on the large-scale experiment ASDEX Upgrade, a world-famous tokamak type fusion plant. We are seeking an electrical engineer (m/f/d) to drive the technical implementation of the GLADIS Heavy Duty (GLADIS HD) project. The focus lies on upgrading the GLADIS test facility for long‑pulse operation (≥ 30 minutes) to test components for future fusion power plants under realistic conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and integration of the high‑voltage power supply (Pulse‑Step Modulation PSM) and control systems (Siemens SIMATIC).
  • Development and optimization of power supplies for ion sources (RF sources, high‑voltage tetrodes).
  • Adaptation of diagnostics (e.g., UV camera systems, multispectral pyrometry) for long‑pulse operation.
  • Collaboration with suppliers (e.g., for high‑voltage systems, semiconductor technology).
  • Ensuring project milestones (pulse durations up to 30 minutes at 20MW/m² heat‑flux density).

Qualifications

  • Completed degree (Bachelor) in electrical engineering or related fields such as physics, mechanical engineering or energy technology.
  • Project management skills and technical documentation experience.
  • Team player with interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Good knowledge of German (at least B2).
  • Fluent English (at least B2; project language).
  • Experience in high‑voltage engineering, power electronics or control systems preferred.

Offer

  • Work on a globally leading test facility with high relevance for fusion research.
  • Close collaboration with scientists and engineers in plasma physics.
  • State‑of‑the‑art infrastructure (high‑voltage labs, control systems).
  • Salary up to grade12 according to the German public sector tariff (TVöD Bund), with subsidies for capital‑forming benefits and annual bonus payments.
  • Position is limited to 2years.
  • Flexible working time models and partial remote working possible in some cases.
  • 30days of vacation (based on a 5‑day week) plus additional days off (e.g., at Christmas and New Year).
  • Company pension plan for the public sector (VBL supplementary pension).
  • Subsidies for job tickets (e.g., Deutschlandticket).
  • Free parking at the institute premises and direct connection to public transport.
  • Various sports activities, groups and courses.
  • Social counseling for support in difficult life and work situations.
  • Discounted vacation apartments in Germany and abroad.
