Job Description Summary
The Farm Level Controls team is seeking an early-career controls engineer to contribute to the development and support of GE Vernova’s WindCONTROL plant controller. WindCONTROL coordinates wind turbines at the plant level to help meet grid-code and plant-operability requirements. In this role, you will work with experienced engineers across controls, turbine, electrical, software, and grid disciplines to translate requirements into control functions, support implementation and verification, and help improve solutions for new projects and the installed fleet. This is an opportunity to build expertise in renewable power systems and plant controls while contributing to the energy transition.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support the development and enhancement of WindCONTROL features by helping analyze requirements, define use cases, and document functional designs for capabilities such as voltage and reactive power control, frequency response, ramp-rate control, and power curtailment.
- Develop and review control logic, models, or configuration with guidance from experienced engineers; use tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and relevant programming languages to explore and implement solutions.
- Assist with simulation, integration, and verification activities.
- Analyze results against requirements and operating scenarios, record evidence, and raise anomalies for investigation.
- Collaborate with turbine controls, electrical and systems engineering, project teams, and service colleagues to understand interfaces, plant operability needs, and customer requirements.
- Support investigation of product or fleet issues by reviewing test results, operational data, and technical records; help identify root causes and contribute to corrective actions and product improvements.
- Prepare clear technical documentation, analyses, and presentations to communicate progress, results, and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of controller development, simulation, and test methods, including maintaining useful technical records and following engineering processes.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or a closely related technical field from an accredited university.
- Early-career candidate with foundational knowledge of control systems, electrical engineering, or software development gained through coursework, projects, an internship/co-op, research, or relevant work experience.
- Programming or modeling experience in at least one of C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, or IEC 61131 languages; willingness to learn additional tools and technologies.
- Fluency in English, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly in writing and in conversation.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team, organize assigned work, and seek input when requirements or results are unclear.
Desired Characteristics
- Master’s degree in controls, electrical, computer, or another relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
- Academic, project, or professional exposure to wind energy, renewable integration, electrical grids, grid codes, or power-system operation.
- Experience modeling, simulating, testing, or implementing control systems, particularly real-time or industrial controls.
- Familiarity with industrial control platforms and communication protocols such as Modbus, EGD, DNP3, OPC UA, or IEC 61850; experience with GE Mark VIe is a plus.
- Exposure to SCADA, data acquisition, or analysis of operational and test data.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, curiosity, attention to detail, and a structured approach to engineering work.
- Strong interpersonal skills and interest in contributing to a global, cross-functional team.
