Our client is a Munich-based boutique consultancy exclusively focused on Financial Services and insurance. Founded by partners with careers at McKinsey and BCG, the firm has built a blue-chip client base across European insurance carriers and FS institutions by doing one thing that large firms rarely can: staying in the room long enough to go genuinely deep.
The firm is at 35 people today and growing to 100 within two years. This is the moment where the people who join define what the firm becomes and where the partner track is real, visible, and close.
The culture is entrepreneurial in the truest sense. Senior people own their clients, their work, and their outcomes. There is no committee between you and the decision, no partner layer between you and the client, and no six-month rotation before you matter. It is the intellectual rigour of top-tier consulting with the ownership model of a scale-up and it is not for everyone. But for the right person, it is exactly what a decade at a big firm has been building toward.
THE ROLE
As Principal Consultant, you are a senior leader in the firm. You bring deep insurance sector expertise to every client situation, you build and own long-term client relationships, and you play a direct role in growing the practice commercially. You are not managed on tasks, you set the standard for the engagements you lead and the people you develop.
- Be the go-to expert in the Insurance practice, the person clients call when the problem is complex, consequential, and requires genuine depth in Insurance IT, operations, or transformation.
- Lead large-scale transformation programmes end-to-end, bringing proprietary frameworks, sector knowledge, and the credibility that comes from having solved this before.
- Contribute thought leadership that builds the firm's reputation publications, conference presence, and client-facing insights that position the practice at the front of the conversation.
- Build and own a portfolio of senior client relationships not just at project level, but as a trusted advisor to Insurance and FS executives at some of Europe's largest carriers.
- Lead proposal development, sales pitches, and client presentations with the authority of someone who has delivered at this level and knows the terrain.
- Identify, develop, and close new client opportunities bringing your own network and instinct for where the next mandate is coming from.
- Drive account growth within existing relationships by understanding client needs deeply enough to see what they need before they ask for it.
- Mentor and develop junior colleagues not as a formal obligation, but because you understand that the quality of the people around you determines the quality of the work.
- Contribute to practice IP, tools, and methodologies owning key assets and keeping them sharp as the market evolves.
- Play an active role in building the firm: culture, capability, and the standards that will define what this place looks like at 100 people.
YOUR PROFILE
- 8+ years at a top-tier consultancy (MBB, Oliver Wyman, Strategy&, Roland Berger, Deloitte S&O, or equivalent) with a sustained focus on Financial Services and insurance. A proven track record leading large-scale transformation programmes in Insurance IT, operations, distribution, or data in the DACH or broader European market.
- Senior relationships at major carriers Allianz, Munich Re, AXA, Zurich, Swiss Re, Hannover Re, or equivalent and a network that translates into real business opportunities.
- Deep enough sector knowledge that clients see you as a peer, not a consultant: IFRS 17, Solvency II, pricing, claims transformation, distribution, or data modernisation you know your ground.
Academic background
- Outstanding degree from a top-tier university in an analytical field: Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, or equivalent. Or an exceptional track record that demonstrates the same rigour: a DAV actuarial qualification, a PhD in a quantitative discipline, or a career marked by intellectual depth at every stage.
Character & culture fit
- You own your work completelyno task-level management required, no hand-holding needed. You set the agenda and you deliver against it.
- You are intellectually serious about insurance you have a point of view on where the European market is going, what the biggest transformation challenges are, and where the opportunities lie. You are not reciting a framework, you are contributing a perspective.
- Entrepreneurial by conviction, not by label you have demonstrated that you can build things, develop relationships from scratch, and operate without the infrastructure of a large firm.
- C1 German deep enough to lead client conversations, negotiate, and present with authority in the DACH market.
- Resilient and composed you keep a clear head when the pressure is on, and the people around you know it.
- Collaborative without ego you know the difference between healthy confidence and the kind that slows a team down.
WHAT IS IN IT FOR YOU
- Real partner track: 2–3 years for the right person. In a firm growing from 35 to 100, partner is not a committee decision — it is a function of what you build and what you bring. The path is visible from day one.
- Equity-like upside: profit share that reflects genuine co-ownership. The people who help build the firm share in what they create significantly more than a fixed bonus at a large firm for a strong performer over a 5-year horizon.
- A network that compounds: working alongside ex-MBB founders and advising blue-chip FS clients gives you access to C-level relationships across European insurance and financial services. Later stage: co-invest alongside leading global entrepreneurs and investors in Financial Services tech companies.
- Development without limits: whatever you need to grow — specialist training, global conferences, leading practitioners in their fields — the firm invests in it. No bureaucratic approval process, no annual budget theatre.
- Munich one of Europe's strongest FS ecosystems: Allianz, Munich Re, and a growing tech and FS start-up scene. State-of-the-art offices in Munich, with additional locations in Frankfurt and Barcelona.
- Wellbeing: premium Gym membership — 10,000+ sports and wellness offerings, locally and online.
