The Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at Graz University of Technology is an internationally highly ranked department committed to excellence in research and teaching. The research at the department covers a broad spectrum of topics that are reflected in our main research areas Biomedical Engineering, Safety and Security, Artificial Intelligence, and Visual Computing. We are proud of our outstanding basic and applied research and encourage interdisciplinary projects. Moreover, our department fosters a close dialogue with industry and encourages and supports the creation of spin-off companies.

Job Description

We are looking for a highly qualified and scientifically proven figure who will represent the field of Biomedical Engineering in research and teaching in an interdisciplinary manner and whose research makes significant contributions to the further development of active implantable medical devices. The focus is on systems that sense, process, and actively modulate physiological functions.

In teaching, the professorship will contribute to Bachelor's and PhD-level education in the Biomedical Engineering study program, and to Master's-level studies in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Information & Computer Engineering and be an engaged mentor for our students. At the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, undergraduate courses are taught in German or English, graduate courses are taught in English. In addition, this person will actively participate in academic self-administration.

The professorship should focus on one or several of the following or related research areas:

open-loop or closed-loop active neural interfaces (neuroprosthetics, bioelectronic medicine, sensors)

cardiovascular and electrophysiology implants (e.g. vagus sensing and stimulation, hemodynamic monitoring)

smart orthopedic and musculoskeletal implants

next-generation implants for endocrine, gastrointestinal, urological regulation

In particular, the professorship is intended to strengthen the existing interuniversity cooperation BioTechMed Graz - a joint initiative between the Medical University of Graz, the University of Graz and Graz University of Technology - and to support it with broad applied experience.

A completed doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field.

Excellent scientific achievements in areas listed above.

Excellent didactic and pedagogical skills.

Experience in management and leadership of multi-person research projects.

Selection Criteria

Experience in the competitive acquisition and management of third-party funded projects.

Willingness for cooperation within and outside the university.

Competences in gender, diversity, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Relocation of the future professor to the greater Graz area (main residence) is required.

Language Skills

Applicants should have a strong command of the English language, both written and spoken, to be able to effectively represent the field internationally, and they must also be willing to learn German if they do not already know the language.
