Grob Aircraft AG is a leading German manufacturer renowned for its pioneering expertise in advanced composite aircraft structures, with decades of experience in developing military training aircraft (e.g., G 120TP) and high-performance lightweight airframes. As we expand our capabilities into next-generation defense platforms — including low-observable technology integration for military training systems, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and research demonstrator programs — we are looking for a Senior RAM/RAS Engineer to lead the development of radar signature reduction solutions.
This is a unique opportunity to bring stealth technology expertise into a company with deep roots in composite aerospace manufacturing, contributing to both national and European defense initiatives.
About The Role
As Senior RAM/RAS Engineer, you will take a leading technical role in designing, developing, and qualifying radar-absorbing materials and structures for integration into Grob's military aircraft platforms and future low-observable demonstrator projects. You will combine deep electromagnetic engineering knowledge with Grob's established composite manufacturing excellence to deliver lightweight, structurally sound, and RF-effective solutions.
In this senior capacity, you will not only drive technical design and testing but also mentor junior engineers, interface directly with governmental and industrial partners, and contribute to strategic technology roadmaps for signature management within the company.
Key Responsibilities
- RAM/RAS Material Design & Formulation: Lead the material-level development, formulation, and integration of radar-absorbing coatings, paints, resonant absorbers, wideband Salisbury/Jaumann layers and structural composite absorbers (core/skin integration).
- Material Qualification Programs: Define, document, and execute qualification and airworthiness compliance plans for RAM/RAS systems according to relevant military and aerospace standards (e.g., MIL-STD, DEF STAN, EASA CS-23/CS-25, STANAG 4671).
- Electromagnetic Material Characterization: Direct RF property measurements (complex permittivity and permeability) together with EM specialists across relevant radar bands using waveguide, coaxial airline, free-space, and resonant cavity measurement techniques.
- Environmental & Durability Testing: Plan and supervise environmental qualification campaigns (thermal cycling, humidity, UV resistance, fluid susceptibility, erosion, adhesion, and fatigue testing) to guarantee operational field longevity of coatings and structural bonds.
- RCS & Anechoic Chamber Testing: Plan & coordinate static and dynamic radar cross-section (RCS) testing on coupons, sub-scale components, and full-scale airframe test articles in anechoic chambers and outdoor ranges together with EM specialists.
- Composite Manufacturing Integration: Work closely with manufacturing to integrate functional RAM fillers into prepreg, infusion, and wet-layup composite processes, ensuring compatibility with carbon-fiber and fiberglass manufacturing techniques.
- Field Repair & Maintainability Concepts: Develop robust maintenance, non-destructive inspection (NDI), and field-level repair procedures for applied RAM coatings and integrated composite structures.
- Customer Reviews & Supplier Interfacing: Represent Grob Aircraft in technical exchanges, working groups, and milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) with government defense agencies, research institutes, material vendors, and defense partners.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience: 8+ years of dedicated professional experience in radar-absorbing material (RAM) development, structural composite integration (RAS), or low-observable material testing, ideally within a military aerospace or defense context.
- Qualification & Test Protocol: Demonstrated track record of developing test plans and qualifying aerospace functional coatings or composite materials against rigorous environmental, thermal, and mechanical criteria.
- Composite Fundamentals: Strong background in composite materials, sandwich structures, prepregs, adhesives, and resin systems used in high-performance lightweight airframes.
- Languages: Fluency in German and English (written and spoken) is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience on tactical UAS/UCAVs, military fighter aircraft, or European low-observable demonstrator programs.
- Practical understanding of non-destructive testing (NDT/NDI) methods for composite laminate integrity and coating thickness verification.
- Existing active German or NATO security clearance (or eligibility to undergo the clearance verification process).
