The Career Opportunity:
The VP-Oncology Clinical Development, Lung and Head/Neck Cancers will report to the SVP, Head of Oncology Clinical Development. The VP will be accountable for the design and implementation of the clinical development strategy across a portfolio of early- and late-phase assets in focused on lung and head/neck cancer. This includes the strategic clinical positioning of individual assets, portfolio combinations, and their clinical development plans. The VP line-manages a group of Clinical Development Leads, Clinical Science Program Leads, Medical Directors and Clinical Scientists, and is expected to effectively allocate clinical resources, manage the team, and provide mentorship.
This role of VP, Oncology Clinical Development, Lung and Head/Neck Cancers requires an experienced, cross-matrix senior leader capable of implementing and executing an integrated clinical strategy in support of the successful clinical development, translational research, regulatory filing and initial market launch of a growing portfolio of innovative and transformational Oncology agents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accountable for the end-to-end clinical development of a portfolio clinical assets from first-time in human (FTIH) clinical trials through proof-of-concept (POC) studies, and registrational trials, to regulatory approval and initial market launch
- Accountable for ensuring medical, clinical and disease area knowledge is integrated into pre-clinical research activities (e.g. prior to candidate selection)
- Lead and drive development of a given oncology disease area knowledge and expertise, aligning and liaising across R&D, medical affairs and commercial functions; co-leading the Lung Oncology Tumor Team (e.g. disease area strategy team)
- Accountable for leading R&D focused scientific advisory boards to position individual assets and portfolio of assets in a specific disease area for success in a highly competitive environment
- Responsible for building and maintenance of effective business partnerships within GSK Oncology Research Unit, Oncology Medical Affairs and Oncology Global Product Strategy teams and with external partners and collaborators.
- As needed, lead intra- and inter-department cross-functional teams, working groups or workstreams in support of Oncology Clinical Development initiatives
- Contribute to the establishment of standards for clinical standards and processes within Oncology Clinical Development.
- Manage, mentor and coach a team of Clinical Development Leads (CDL), Clinical Science Program Leads (CSPLs), Clinical Scientists, and Medical Directors and allocate resources across a portfolio of assets. Provide direct reports with ongoing coaching, development and leadership; includes holding regular staff meetings, check-ins and 1:1 meetings
- Guide CDL and CSPLs to ensure cross-functional integration, coordination, collaboration, and alignment to enable effective and efficient clinical development plan (CDP) execution.
- Foster the development of our culture within the team of direct reports: be bold, be swift, act with integrity, as a OneOncology community
- Please note: This position requires an on-site office -based presence 2 to 3 days a week in the UK (London or Stevenage); Switzerland (Zug); US (Upper Providence, PA. Waltham. MA or Boston. MA); or Poland (Warsaw).
Basic Qualifications:
- Medical degree and a clinical medical specialty qualification/registration in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology (adult or peds), Hematology or Pathology.
- Direct line management experience of oncology clinical development teams as well as matrix management experience.
- Pharmaceutical experience in early and late phase Oncology drug development
- Experience with clinical and translational investigation of Oncology agents in lung and head/neck cancers
- Experience in integrating translational research activities into first-time in human (FTIH) trials to establish clinical proof-of-concept
- Experience successfully developing and executing oncology Clinical Development Plans
- Experience in the successful filing, approval and initial launch of a novel oncology therapy
- Experience in working with external scientific experts and clinical key-opinion-leaders to position clinical development programs in a highly competitive business environment and with orchestrating scientific advisory boards
- Experience working with regulatory agencies and ability to provide clinical leadership for the filing of INDs and NDAs
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in addition to medical degree and registration/certification
