Scientist – Quantum Sensors & Qubit Technology (m/f/d)

TheSemiconductor Laboratory (HLL) of the Max Planck Society, located on the research campus in Garching near Munich, is a leading facility for the development of highly precise radiation sensors and detector systems. On approximately1,400 m² of cleanroom space, HLL develops, fabricates and tests advanced semiconductor detectors for applications inX-ray astronomy, particle physics and materials research. With around50 employees from different nationalities, HLL provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment in which scientists, engineers and technology specialists work closely together across the entire development chain — from fundamental research and simulation to device design, fabrication and experimental characterization.

To strengthen our activities inquantum sensing and advanced quantum-device technologies, and to provide scientific and technological support to our research, engineering and service teams, we are looking for aScientist – Quantum Sensors & Qubit Technology (m/f/d) to join our team at the earliest possible date on a full-time basis (39 hours/week).

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and optimizequantum sensor concepts based on qubit systems and quantum effects.
  • Perform advancednumerical simulations and modelingof qubit-based sensing systems, including relevant physical processes, noise sources and system-level performance.
  • Work closely withtechnology development, engineering and experimental teamsto translate simulation results into practical implementations.
  • Analyze experimental data and use the results to refine physical models and sensor designs.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, technical documentation and intellectual property.

Your profile

  • PhD inphysics, electrical engineering, applied physics, quantum engineeringor a related field.
  • Background inquantum sensing, qubit control and precision measurement.
  • Experience withnumerical simulation, modeling and system design.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills combined with a practical, technology-oriented mindset.
  • Strong motivation to work in close cooperation withtechnology, engineering and experimental teams.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.

Advantageous experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly valuable:

  • Cleanroom / semiconductor / microfabrication experience
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, COMSOL or equivalent
  • MEMS/NEMS or integrated sensor technologies
  • Precision measurement and low-noise instrumentation
  • Experience bridgingqubit physics, device design and fabrication technology

What we offer

  • International environment, diverse responsibilities and a high degree of autonomy:Flat hierarchies and a collaborative, agile team within an internationally renowned research institution. You will work closely with scientists, engineers and technology specialists across disciplines and have the opportunity to shape the development of innovative quantum-sensing technologies.
  • Advantages of the public sector:Remuneration according to the German public service pay scale TVöD (Bund), depending on qualifications and experience; occupational pension scheme (VBL); 30 days of annual leave (31 days as of 2027), plus additional days off on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The position is initially limited to two years, with the possibility of subsequent permanent employment.
  • Work-life balance and compatibility of family and career:Flexible working hours (flextime), opportunities for mobile working, support in finding childcare and care for family members, and a comprehensive company health management program.
  • Professional development:Thorough onboarding and opportunities for internal and external training and further education tailored to your individual needs. You will have the opportunity to continuously develop your expertise in quantum sensing, qubit technology, simulation and semiconductor technology.
  • Research campus:Excellent access by public transport, including the possibility of a monthly subsidy for the “Deutschland-Job-Ticket”, or by car with free parking in the immediate vicinity of the laboratory. A canteen and further dining options are available nearby, as well as campus-wide events and activities.

The Max Planck Society strives for gender equality and diversity. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
