Role Objective The Data Center Expert will act as a trusted advisor to Novartis for end‑to‑end data center strategy, setup, and optimization. The role focuses on Switzerland‑specific location feasibility, detailed infrastructure design, and business‑aligned resilience and disaster recovery (DR) planning, ensuring regulatory compliance, availability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
Core Responsibilities 1. Data Center Strategy & Location Feasibility (Switzerland)
Advise on data center location feasibility within Switzerland, considering:
Data sovereignty & compliance (Swiss regulations, pharma requirements)
Proximity to business operations and critical workloads
Latency, connectivity, and inter‑DC networking
Risk factors (seismic, flood, power grid stability)
Support build vs co‑location vs hyperscaler adjacency decisions.
Provide recommendations aligned to business continuity, regulatory needs, and long‑term scalability.
2. Data Center Design & Infrastructure Planning
Deep understanding and hands‑on experience across all physical and logical layers:
Facility & Space
Rack density planning and growth forecasting
Power & Cooling
Power provisioning, redundancy models (N, N+1, 2N)
UPS, generators, power distribution units (PDUs)
Cooling technologies, thermal efficiency, and sustainability considerations
Structured Cabling
Redundancy, segregation, and cable management best practices
Define server, storage, and network architectures aligned to workload needs.
Support hybrid and multi‑cloud connectivity (on‑prem AWS/Azure).
Design architectures that support future cloud migration or coexistence.
Ensure standardization, scalability, and operational simplicity.
4. Disaster Recovery (DR) & Business Resilience
Define and design DR strategies aligned to business criticality:
Ensure DR integration across:
Primary & secondary data centers
Cloud‑based DR where appropriate
Conduct DR readiness assessments, gap analysis, and test strategy definition.
Align DR design with regulatory, audit, and pharma validation requirements.
5. Security, Compliance & Regulatory Alignment
Ensure data center designs comply with:
Pharma and life sciences compliance expectations
Internal security & risk frameworks
Embed physical security, access control, and monitoring into DC design.
Support audits, assessments, and regulatory reviews when required.
6. Operational Readiness & Transition Support
Support DC setup, transition, or modernization programs.
Define operational models, SOPs, and runbooks.
Advise on incident response, monitoring, and availability management.
Work closely with application, security, network, and cloud teams to ensure smooth operations.
Key Skills & Experience
15+ years of experience in data center architecture, setup, or modernization.
Strong hands‑on knowledge of:
Space, power, cooling, and cabling design
High‑availability and resilient architectures
Proven experience designing and implementing DR solutions.
Deep understanding of regulated industry environments, preferably pharma or life sciences.
Experience working with Swiss or European data center environments (preferred).
Strong stakeholder management skills; able to operate at CXO and infrastructure leadership level.
