Academic HES Assistant in AI Software and Systems
With the rise of AI, made possible by its new capabilities, the way is now open to explore innovative ways to use it, both in the industrial sector and in academia. How to make the best use of existing public models while preserving sovereignty? What are the best tools and methods to use AI-based software solutions tailored to each field? We address these questions and other related issues within a portfolio of applied research projects carried out in collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
We are looking for a research engineer to design and build software by, for and with AI workloads, ranging from Kubernetes operators and custom schedulers to inference pipelines and monitoring systems. You will rigorously evaluate your work and co-author papers, as part of a motivated team aiming to bring innovations to various institutions. The projects vary in scope and orientation, but their essence remains the same: writing production-quality code and defending it with data.
Attached to the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), you will be responsible within the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies IICT (http://iict.heig-vd.ch/) in the Software Engineering thematic group with the following missions:
MAIN MISSIONS
- Design and implement software for and with Artificial Intelligence - Participate in applied research and development (R&D) work in the field of software engineering related to Artificial Intelligence - Collaborate with industrial partners throughout the process, from problem formulation to technology transfer - Participate in teaching tasks of the department: assisting with course preparation, supervision and preparation of practical work - Participate in administrative management and any other activity necessary for the smooth running of the department and the research entity
DESIRED PROFILE
- Degree from a University of Applied Sciences or equivalent qualification in computer science, software engineering or related field - Advanced interest and daily use of AI coding assistants - Good knowledge of databases and API design - Proficiency in at least one language among: Rust, C , Go, Java, Python - Knowledge of advanced LLM features: tool-use, chaining, agents, RAG - Good communication skills and organisational sense - Autonomy, structured work and good analytical skills - Technical mastery of English, in addition to French
Work rate : 80-100%
Start date : 1 August 2026 or to be agreed
Contract duration: 1 year, renewable up to 5 years
