Must Haves

  • Proven experience in software engineering with a strong technical background in Node.js, AWS/Telekom, and React or React-Native.
  • At least 3 years of leadership experience managing engineering teams, with a track record of successful team development and project delivery.
  • Demonstrated expertise in high-level system design, with the ability to architect systems that are scalable, reliable, and efficient.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to navigate complex team dynamics and foster a positive, productive work environment.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies and a commitment to implementing software engineering best practices.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Located in Germany and/or Europe

Nice to Haves

  • Tech or domain knowledge in AI and Machine Learning
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems (ISO 13485) for medical products
  • Experience in TypeScript
  • Familiarity with native build tools like XCode and Gradle
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance and its impact on engineering processes and documentation
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. (required for relocation)

General Information

HelloBetter is a pioneer in the field of digital healthcare. For more than 10 years, we have been developing evidence-based digital health applications for the prevention and treatment of mental health conditions. Our applications cover a variety of areas, including stress management, depression, problematic alcohol use, panic disorder and anxiety, vaginismus, and sleep disorders.

Six of HelloBetter\’s ten applications are approved as digital health applications. They are available free of charge by prescription to all insured adults in Germany.

As Engineering Manager (m/f/x) you lead one of our Engineering squads (currently 6 people) and work across teams to deliver both our product and technical roadmap while minimizing technical debt.

Reports to/Hiring Manager: Amit Gupta (CTO)

Talent Partner: Celia Nielsen (People & Talent Partner)

Team Size: 29 people (Engineering + Product)

Direct Reports: 6 people

Salary Band: LS L193-107k (gross)* + VSOP (20% of annual gross salary)

*based on German benchmark, adjusted to local cost of living for remote hires

Location: Remote-first (relocation possible)

Offices: Berlin, Hamburg and Potsdam

Interview Process:

  1. Introduction Chat with Celia (People & Talent Partner) (30min): Get to know Celia as your Talent Partner, who will guide your through the entire process, share your experience, motivation and learn more about HelloBetter, the role and the interview experience with us.
  2. Hiring Manager + Culture Interview with Amit (CTO) and Joanna (Head of People & Culture) (60-90min): Get to know your future Direct Manager, deep dive into your motivation & technical background, your leadership experience, the role and your team.
  3. Challenge Interview with Engineering Manager and Product Manager (60min): Get to know your peers, deep dive into your work style, process capabilities, and mindset.
  4. Meet your Team Chat (30min): Get to know the future team you will be leading.
  5. Offer talk (15min) with Amit

Your objectives

  • Team Leadership and Development:
    • Lead, mentor, and support a team of software engineers to deliver high-quality software solutions.
    • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to provide personalized support, career development guidance, and constructive feedback.
  • Hiring and Team Building: Actively participate in the hiring process to identify, attract, and retain talented engineers. Foster a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
  • Technical Project Management:Oversee the development of scalable, secure, and maintainable code. Ensure adherence to best practices in software development, including Agile methodologies, code reviews, and CI/CD processes.
  • High-Level System Design: Lead the architectural design and review processes, ensuring the development of high-level system designs that support scalability, reliability, and performance objectives. Champion architectural best practices and introduce innovative design solutions.
  • Product Collaboration: Work closely with product management, design, and clinical teams to define product roadmaps and deliverables, ensuring alignment between technical execution and strategic goals.
  • Empowerment and Innovation: Encourage innovation and ownership among team members by promoting a culture of continuous learning and empowerment. Facilitate opportunities for professional growth and skill development.
