The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

Extreme events caused by climate change, such as heat waves, heavy rainfall and floods, will continue to increase in the future. The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research is investigating the expected massive impacts on ecosystems and the resulting economic costs in Germany and Europe. The necessary prerequisites for this are high-resolution environmental system models running on high-performance computers and high-resolution in-situ and satellite-based observation data sets. To this end, the UFZ operates observatories and innovative observing systems (e.g. TERENO and MOSES), infrastructure platforms (e.g. CITEPro and GCEF) and modelling platforms (e.g. mHM and OGS).

In order to guarantee the long-term availability of research data according to the FAIR principles and to ensure the connection to national and international data infrastructures (e.g. NFDI and EOSC), we have established the Research Data Management team at the UFZ.

You would like to play an active role in shaping the digital transformation of research and would like to work in a team with inspiring colleagues? Then become part of our research data management at the UFZ! With your expertise you will support us in innovative research projects that contribute to the balance between social development and long-term environmental protection.

Your tasks

  • You will work on projects together with the scientific community and develop software architectures and interfaces for sustainable, modular and scalable infrastructures, services and applications for research data management.
  • You will administer both classical IT and container-based systems for the operation of scientific applications.
  • You will evaluate the latest IT trends and IT technologies as part of pilot projects.
  • You will have the opportunity to play an active role in shaping and designing innovation projects .

We offer

  • Flexible working hours for a good work-life balance
  • Excellent technical equipment , use of the latest technologies in the IT sector
  • The freedom to develop innovative solutions in support of research
  • Working in an agile, interdisciplinary and multinational team and excellent integration into national and international research networks
  • The opportunity for personal development through an extensive range of qualification and further training opportunities
  • Working in Leipzig , one of the most attractive cities in Germany, with a high quality of life and cultural diversity
  • Offers , such as a beautiful science campus with central infrastructure, support with childcare, advice on caring for family members, etc.
  • An annual salary of 51.000 € – 76.000 € gross, depending on qualifications and special benefits under the collective agreements , e.g. collectively agreed pension scheme, annual special payment, capital-forming benefits and the opportunity to participate in a job ticket scheme

Your profile

  • Completed a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in computer science or a comparable degree programme with a focus on information technology – career changers with relevant experience are welcome
  • Experience in the administration of Linux-based servers, as well as in the operation of container-based applications (e.g. with Kubernetes) in on-premise or cloud environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, or VMware)

We encourage you to apply even if you feel that you do not fully meet all the requirements of the job advertisement.

Your work is an integral part of a larger whole that contributes to realising the vision of shaping digital and cultural change in research far beyond the UFZ. We would be delighted if you would like to join us on this journey!
