The job
We are looking for a scientist (f/m/x) to work on the "German Butterfly Indicator" project, which is funded by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The project aims to develop an indicator for Topic 1.2, 'Reversing the decline in insects and their biodiversity', of the National Biodiversity Strategy 2030 (NBS 2030). Another objective is to calculate the Grassland Butterfly Index (GBI), which the EU Nature Restoration Regulation (W-VO) considers a potential reporting indicator. To obtain the most representative indicators possible, we need to examine the extent to which monitoring data collected systematically at federal level by the German Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (TMD), the German Insect Monitoring Scheme and Natura 2000 monitoring can be used for their calculation, as well as other relevant data. Based on the results, a concept for organising workflows and the updating process will be developed.
- Development of an aggregated butterfly indicator for the NBS 2030
- Compilation and harmonization of data from various monitoring schemes
- Calculation and review of alternative versions of indicators
- Further development of existing analytical approaches, R - coding and their documentation
- Calculation of the GBI based on methods prescribed by the W-VO
- Reporting and publishing the results in German and English language
- Presentation of results at project meetings and meetings of the advisory board
- Communication with data owners (mainly authorities of German counties), the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and other stakeholders involved in biodiversity monitoring

Your profile
- Master's degree or PhD in biology, bioinformatics, environmental sciences, nature conservation or related subjects
- Experience in statistical modelling
- Proficiency in R - codingExperience with GIS applications and data management is desirable
- Excellent oral and written communication skills (German and English)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Motivationand interest in topics related to biodiversity
