Institute of Surface Science is looking for a PhD candidate (f/m/d) for the project \“Reactive oxygen species-driven metallic corrosion in urban microenvironment: real-time monitoring and machine learning-based predictions\“ (ROSCOR), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for three years (2025-2028).

We seek ambitious doctoral researchers with interests in modern corrosion science. The place of employment is Geesthacht. Anticipated starting time for the position is as soon as possible.

Your tasks

The proposed doctoral project aims at clarifying the effects of aerosol-bound reactive oxygen species (ROS) on atmospheric corrosion of aluminum alloy and zinc in urban microclimate. To realize project objectives, real-time field monitoring, advanced laboratory analytics, and machine learning-based modelling will be conducted.

Within the project, you will learn and combine techniques from sensors, unique respirometric systems, electrochemical techniques, state-of-the-art electron microscopy and spectroscopy facilities, and machine learning. You will have the opportunity to attend courses, conferences, workshops, and summer schools.

Your profile

  • Completed academic degree (Diploma (University)/Master\’s) in material science, corrosion science, or a closely related field
  • Comprehensive knowledge in material chemistry and analytical chemistry (corrosion, electrochemistry, plating, etc.)
  • Knowledge/Interest in machine learning
  • Excellent English speaking and writing abilities. German language skills are a plus.
  • Interdisciplinary team working skills with high independence
