Every day, the human body produces more than 10¹¹ platelets, which are essential for hemostasis and wound healing. Yet platelet availability remains constrained by short shelf life, dependence on donors, and supply limitations.
At HemostOD SA, we are developing an innovative in vitro platform to manufacture functional, therapeutic-grade platelets from stem cell‑derived and genetically engineered megakaryocytes. Our goal is to provide a reliable, safe, and scalable alternative to donor‑derived platelets and unlock new opportunities in transfusion medicine, hemostasis, immunology, and drug delivery.
Join a fast‑moving and scientifically ambitious biotechnology company at an important stage of growth. As we advance our platform towards preclinical and future clinical applications, you will contribute directly to the execution, optimization, and reproducibility of our stem cell, megakaryocyte, and platelet‑production processes.
Your Role As a Senior Research Associate, you will be a key member of the R&D team, supporting hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell differentiation, megakaryopoiesis, platelet production, and platelet characterization. You will independently execute assigned experiments, take ownership of assays and laboratory processes, troubleshoot technical issues, and generate reliable, reproducible, and well‑documented data.
Your responsibilities will include:
Execute protocols for the culture and differentiation of human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells into megakaryocytes and platelets.
Conduct platelet characterization and functional testing, cell phenotyping, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and imaging.
Perform molecular biology analyses, including qPCR and Western blotting, and support gene‑delivery and gene‑editing experiments using lentiviral systems or CRISPR/Cas9.
Analyse, interpret, and clearly present experimental results and technical observations.
Recognize experimental deviations, perform initial troubleshooting, and contribute to protocol and assay optimization.
Take ownership of assigned assays, equipment, or laboratory processes and ensure their reliable execution.
Maintain complete experimental records and prepare reagents, media, buffers, samples, and other materials.
Support laboratory organization, inventory, equipment maintenance, and quality and safety practices.
Collaborate with scientists, engineers, external partners, and other team members, and support the onboarding or technical training of junior colleagues when appropriate.
Your Profile We are seeking a motivated, rigorous, and highly hands‑on laboratory professional committed to scientific quality. You can organize and execute experiments independently, manage multiple priorities, and contribute constructively within a multidisciplinary startup environment.
Qualifications and Experience
Master’s degree in stem cell biology, hematology, molecular biology, biotechnology, immunology, or a related discipline.
At least 3 years of relevant post‑degree, hands‑on laboratory experience, preferably in biotechnology, pharmaceutical R&D, translational research, or a highly structured academic laboratory. Five or more years of directly relevant experience is preferred.
Hands‑on mammalian cell‑culture experience, preferably with primary human cells, hematopoietic cells, or stem cell‑derived populations.
Experience in platelet biology, platelet‑function testing, megakaryocyte biology, hemostasis, or thrombocytopenic disorders is highly desirable. Relevant experience in stem cell differentiation, hematopoiesis, regenerative medicine, or cell‑based therapeutic development will also be considered.
Experience with flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, imaging, and cell‑based analytical methods.
Familiarity with qPCR and Western blotting; experience with lentiviral systems or CRISPR/Cas9 is an advantage.
Experience working according to structured procedures, quality systems, GLP principles, or regulated development practices is an advantage.
Strong technical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to recognize deviations and contribute to assay optimization.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to reliable, reproducible, and high‑quality data.
A team player and problem solver with strong interpersonal communication skills, emotional maturity, and the ability to remain calm, constructive, and effective under pressure or when navigating changing priorities.
Flexibility and willingness to learn new techniques, support laboratory operations, and contribute beyond core responsibilities when required.
Fluency in English for laboratory documentation, scientific reporting, and team collaboration.
