At Hitachi Energy Research, we are shaping the energy systems of tomorrow.

As the power grid evolves into a complex, digital “system of systems” integrating renewable energy, power electronics, and distributed assets, ensuring long‑term reliability and availability becomes a central challenge.

We are looking for a Scientist in Reliability Modelling to drive innovation in system‑level reliability modelling and lifecycle optimization of power grid components and systems, large‑scale power grid infrastructures, including emerging applications in challenging environments to help development of sustainable energy sources and their integration to the power grid of the future.

  • How you’ll make an impact
  • Drive the translation of innovative ideas and advanced methodologies for reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) modelling integrating single‑asset physical knowledge into modelling to represent interdependencies, redundancy, and system‑of‑systems behaviour.
  • Contribute to methodologies such as Reliability‑Centered Maintenance and reliability twin concepts for decision‑making under uncertainty with far‑reaching impact on GW‑level power systems over decades of operation.
  • Collaborate with a global and interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers across research and business units to identify, shape, and solve impactful industrial challenges.
  • Build relationships within the company and actively share your knowledge and expertise.

Interact with local and global external partners including universities, technologies and products suppliers.

  • Disseminate your results in scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports.
  • Your background
  • Ph D in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Reliability Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related field.
  • Systems thinker capable of bridging component‑level physics and system‐level performance.

Strong expertise in system‑level reliability modelling (RAMS, RBD, FTA, Monte Carlo, stochastic modelling).

  • Experience with complex engineering systems (energy, aerospace, automotive, or similar high‑reliability domains).

Including knowledge of maintenance strategies and lifecycle optimisation for repairable systems.

  • Familiarity with power grid technologies (HVDC, substations, converters) is an advantage but not strictly required.
  • Proven track record at top scientific conferences and journal publications.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, team player attitude, initiative and creativity.
