Overview
A Senior Counsel is an individual who creates strategic leverage for the Department and greater organizational value for the individual and Company through: the development and application of unique knowledge experience and skill; recognition by the Department and internal clients as a specialist; and contributions to the development of other attorneys through project delegation supervision and coaching in each case in the same single selected legal specialty area. A Senior Counsel also remains responsible for a portfolio of commercial contracts. This position involves frequent communication with internal clients, business unit management, vice presidents, C-level executives, external customers, partners, vendors, and outside counsel. A Senior Counsel fulfills responsibilities in a manner which supports the Company’s business objectives and with an appropriate sense of urgency to meet internal client requirements.
What you will be doing
- Analyze and provide legal advice to Hyland Software, executives, business unit management, and employees related to complex and unusual legal matters and matters presenting high levels of legal, business or financial risk in the selected legal specialty area, as well as commercial contracts.
- Develop, maintain and expand a detailed knowledge of the Company’s business, products and services, and legal or regulatory matters that may be applicable in the selected legal specialty area.
- Select (subject to General Counsel approval) and manage, including budget management, outside counsel related to legal matters handled.
- Coordinate with contract administrators for review of all contracts.
- Delegate legal matters in the selected legal specialty area to other attorneys and supervise and provide coaching to other attorneys regarding delegated matters.
- Fulfill such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the General Counsel.
What will make you successful
- Juris Doctor Degree (or equivalent) and active law license in Ohio or other applicable jurisdiction.
- Preferred to have 10+ years of relevant legal experience, or 5 – 10+ years if at least 4 years of the relevant legal experience as an attorney at the Company.
- Demonstrated unique knowledge, experience or skill in the selected legal specialty area.
- Attention to detail, strong administrative skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate and develop solutions to complex business problems.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Excellent communication skills in writing and speech.
- Excellent skills in MS Office, especially Word and Excel.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the principal duties of the job.
