Introduction
1,300 employees make IBM’s Research & Development laboratory in Boeblingen, Germany, the largest European facility in IBM’s global network of development laboratories.
The hardware development team with about 200 engineers works on central components for IBM servers of the POWER, IBM Z and Quantum computer families. These provide the safest and most reliable base infrastructure for cloud computing, machine learning, AI, big data, analytics, technical computing, and countless online transactions in the IT industry.
The hardware development takes place in an international work environment with our partner laboratories in the USA, Israel and India. Our mission is the development of the most powerful server systems in the world. Naturally we are continuously working on optimizing our development process. Methods like Agile as well as Design Thinking are part of our daily business.

Your Role and Responsibilities
Your Job: Electronic Design Automation

We are hiring university graduates who want to work with the latest semiconductor technology and implement electronic design automation methods and tools for the development of the world’s fastest and most powerful server processors.

Our processors integrate billions of transistors, that are clocked with up to 5.5 GHz. The complexity of the circuits can only be managed by the use the latest development tools. The electronic design automation (EDA) team develops the needed algorithms and tools with a focus on physical design. The diverse physical design tasks that can be solved with EDA tool support include

  • Ideal placement of circuits (floorplanning, placement)
  • Ideal wire connections between circuits (routing)
  • Optimization of the net list according to several optimization goals
  • Automatic generation of transistor and circuit layouts
  • And many more

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Masters degree or PhD in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or similar fields of study
  • Good programming skills and knowledge of data structures
  • Knowledge in development, test, maintenance and debugging of EDA software in C++ and Python to solve complex problems in VLSI design areas
  • Knowledge in electronic design automation principles and methods
  • Hands-on experience in electronic design automation desirable
  • Knowledge in the basics of circuit design optimization of ASICs or processors
  • Strong intrinsic motivation
  • Strong team player and open minded to work in an international team
  • Strong communication skills in English and preferably in German
