Photonics Engineer in Hannover

Hannover Vollzeit Vor Ort
I

An exciting opportunity for a PIC Design Engineer to take a key role in developing a new photonic computing architecture for energy-efficient, ultra-low-latency AI and edge computing.

You’ll help transition proven fibre-based photonic technology onto an integrated photonics platform, working across PIC architecture, simulation, foundry fabrication, tape-out and first-device characterisation.

As a PIC Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Design and simulate photonic integrated circuits and PIC architectures
  • Translate fibre-based optical functions into integrated photonic components and processing layers
  • Develop simulation and fabrication-ready PIC designs
  • Work with foundry processes and PDKs
  • Support design reviews, tape-outs and fabrication iterations
  • Characterise fabricated photonic devices and compare results against simulation
  • Feed experimental results into future PIC designs
  • Collaborate with photonics leadership, foundries, fabrication facilities, and technology partners

To be successful as a PIC Design Engineer, your background and experience will include:

  • Master’s or PhD in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or similar
  • Strong photonic simulation skills
  • Understanding of integrated optical components and waveguide photonics
  • Experience taking photonic designs towards fabricated hardware
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable taking technical ownership within a small, interdisciplinary deep-tech team

Experience with Lumerical, COMSOL, IPKISS, Nazca or GDSFactory would be particularly valuable.

Experience with hybrid photonic integration, RF photonics, foundry PDKs, cleanroom fabrication, optical characterisation or photonic packaging would also be advantageous.

A rare opportunity to join an early-stage European deep-tech team and have significant influence over a next-generation photonic computing platform, taking technology from the lab towards integrated hardware.
