Purpose of the Job
The Head of Engineering connects business strategy, product priorities and architecture to engineering execution, modernising capabilities and creating a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
Responsibilities
- Lead, develop and scale the engineering organization, ensuring teams are highly capable and deliver secure, reliable, customer‑focused digital products.
- Manage engineering managers, tech leads and software engineers, setting clear standards for technical excellence, delivery accountability, quality and resilience.
- Translate business and technology strategy into strong engineering execution, modern ways of working and measurable delivery outcomes.
- Drive continuous improvement across cloud engineering, APIs, DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, incident management and platform reliability.
- Build a strong engineering culture based on ownership, learning, accountability and high performance.
- Hire, coach and develop engineering leadership, removing blockers and improving delivery predictability.
- Ensure engineering decisions balance speed, maintainability, regulatory expectations and customer trust.
Education Level
Bachelor’s Degree.
Experience & Demonstrated Competencies
- Proven experience leading engineering teams in complex, cloud‑based, regulated environments, preferably in banking or fintech.
- Strong track record of building and scaling engineering organisations and improving delivery performance.
- Expertise in modern software engineering practices: cloud platforms, API design, DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, incident management and security engineering.
- Experience collaborating with Product, Architecture, Security, Risk, Compliance and Operations to deliver reliable, scalable and compliant digital products.
- People leadership, organisational design, stakeholder management, change leadership and delivery accountability.
- A modern product‑engineering mindset combined with discipline required for a bank.
Language Competencies
Tech Stacks: Python, JavaScript. Professional in written and spoken English.
Knowledge Required
- Modern software engineering, cloud‑native architecture, platform engineering and product‑led delivery in complex digital environments.
- Practical knowledge of APIs, microservices, AWS, DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, incident management and operational excellence.
- Regulated environment knowledge: security, data protection, operational resilience, risk management and compliance expectations.
- Engineering leadership knowledge: organisational design, hiring, coaching, performance management, governance and continuous improvement.
- Capacity to create high‑performing autonomous teams with strong engineering standards and alignment with business priorities.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication and change leadership capabilities.
