Staff Specialist Corporate Legal Counsel

Provide legal support for labour law matters in AP region.
Your Role
Key responsibilities in your new role

• Provide legal support for labour law matters in AP region, particularly Malaysia, including collective work agreements (with unions), post-merger integration labour topics, co-employment risk issues, labour related internal rules / regulations / policies, labour related contract templates and HR-related university program engagement contract. The Asia-Pacific region (“AP region”) comprises Australia, India, South Korea and South East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam).
• Review/advise on and provide legal support for regulatory compliance topics (e.g. data protection, RBA audits, human rights law)in various AP countries.
• Review and negotiate certain categories of procurement contracts with suppliers and vendors, excluding central services procurement contracts.
• May also provide occasional support for the following categories / areas of law in the AP region, as assigned:
  • Corporate secretarial legal support for Infineon companies/branches
  • Leases or certain categories of construction-related documents
• Provide basic legal training to relevant business stakeholders, particularly HR and Procurement departments.

Your Profile
Qualifications and skills to help you succeed

• Training/qualifications – Qualified lawyer in Malaysia, preferably who has passed the Certificate in Legal Practice / New Bar Course in Malaysia (or equivalent professional qualification examinations). Fluency in English (including drafting in English) is required.
• Experience – 3-5 years of relevant professional experience. Having in house experience will be an advantage.
• Functional knowledge – Significant and demonstrable understanding / experience of labour law / disciplinary action topics and processes, including principles, concepts, processes and application for / to employees, government agencies, labour audits and post-merger integration labour issues. Able to quickly understand and pick up regulatory compliance legal risks and plan suitable mitigation strategies. Working knowledge / experience / understanding in other legal areas (e.g. corporate secretarial law, real estate, commercial contracts, IP and litigation) will be an advantage.
• Skills – Must have a good understanding of labour/governance legal risks and concerns. Must be able to understand impact of legal risks on business objectives, and advise internal stakeholders on such impact of legal risks on business objectives/needs and strategic decisions. Must have a service delivery mindset and be open to accepting feedback on areas of improvement and stakeholder management/collaboration. Good legal drafting skills are required (drafting of policies/regulations/ agreements). Able to learn about unfamiliar topics (particularly regulatory compliance topics), and to handle new or unfamiliar legal questions by analytical thought. Good analytical, service delivery-/client–oriented and communication skills will be an advantage. Commercial acumen and ability to think creatively to provide pragmatic legal solutions to achieve business objectives will be an advantage.
• Work quality – Self-motivated and responsible worker who has initiative. Must be able to organize and priorities work and respond within deadlines. Can anticipate risks and potential disputes, and attempts to resolve them with guidance from manager. Must understand / be able to discern when to escalate topics, issues or problems.
• Job Location – Penang, Malaysia with business trips to Singapore ~2-3 times a year and to Germany once every ~3 years.
