The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) seeks a

Postdoctoral Researcher and Research Network Coordinator in Global Health.

This vacant position will be integrated in the global health research group led by Dr. Michael Stolpe. The group cooperates closely with the new inter- and transdisciplinary Leibniz Lab “Pandemic Preparedness: One Health, One Future” which is funded by the Leibniz Association. The vacant position’s main responsibility will be to coordinate a diverse team of outstanding researchers and scholars from several participating Leibniz Institutes and to develop an analytical framework and a roadmap for policymakers identifying the most important themes and potential international conflicts, especially between countries in the global North and South, that should be addressed and/or resolved in the proposed “Global Accord on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response”. The research aims to generate evidence-based policy advice for national and international decision makers. Thus, excellent analytical, quantitative, management, networking and communication skills are required.

Working environment

Apart from working closely with fellow group members at the Kiel Institute, the successful candidate will liaise with a range of external partners, stakeholders, policy makers and the media, help shape the further development of the Leibniz Lab and contribute to the drafting of the roadmap and a white paper targeted at international policy makers and the public.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following conditions:

  • She/he holds a doctorate degree in economics, health economics, health sciences, epidemiology, bioinformatics, public health, medicine, political economy or international relations, ideally with a focus on global health, infectious diseases, public finance, trade theory, economic evaluations or decision theory and has an excellent academic record as well as the ambition to make a real difference in global health.
  • The position’s primary focus will be on respiratory pandemics, triggered by viruses of zoonotic origin, such as coronaviruses, influenza and bird flu. Interest and experience in empirical applications of economic theory, behavioral sciences, evolutionary biology or epidemiology and in the analysis of large health data sets or health economic modelling are desirable.
  • The candidate should have experience and/or familiarity with quantitative methods, including relevant software, such as STATA, Matlab, R or TreeAge, and with the drafting of policy papers and should have a strong interest in developing novel research-based proposals for global health policy and global health governance.
  • The working language is English; excellent English skills are required. Some knowledge of German would be useful but is not essential.

The position is based in Kiel and is initially funded for one year, starting no later than January 1 st , 2025. The salary will be based on the German public sector pay scale at grade EG 13 TV-L. The position is full-time, yet a reduction of working time can in principle be negotiated. Depending on additional third-party funding becoming available and after successful internal evaluation, contract extensions may be feasible.

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy values diversity. We welcome applications regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age or sexual orientation. We strive for equal participation of women in all employee groups. Professional gender equality is guaranteed.
