Organizational Setting The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA’s duties and responsibilities as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. The Division of Information Management (SGIM) implements state‑of‑the‑art methodologies and techniques for the collection, processing and analysis of safeguards‑relevant information, including declarations, sample evaluations and open‑source data. Staff perform data validation and complex information analysis to support in‑field activities and provide key input to the State evaluation process.
Main Purpose Reporting to the Section Head, the Associate Information Analyst (Open Source) utilizes and further develops experience in open‑source research methods to collect and evaluate information related to the nuclear fuel cycles of assigned States. The analyst collects, reviews and analyzes data from a wide range of sources to ascertain whether there are indications of undeclared nuclear material or activities within a State and prepares input for analytical reports used by the Department of Safeguards in its State Evaluation Groups. The role offers varied research and analysis opportunities and the chance to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for information collection, processing and analysis.

Analyst – conduct open‑source research for assigned States and contribute to analytical products and reports.
Team player – contribute to projects and initiatives within the Section and Division.
Collaborator – liaise with colleagues in other Divisions within the Department of Safeguards to provide and clarify analytical findings.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Collaborate with Section staff in the collection, review and analysis of information for assigned States, including open‑source data, nuclear material accounting data, satellite imagery and environmental sampling data.
Conduct analyses to ascertain indications of undeclared nuclear material or activities and collaborate with colleagues to identify recommended follow‑up actions.
Prepare contributions to analytical products and reports to summarize findings and recommendations as input to State Evaluation Groups.
Conduct further research as requested by State Evaluation Groups and work with Section staff to identify additional research issues and tasks.
Identify possible new sources of information relevant for research tasks and consult with Section staff to evaluate reliability.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for the collection and analysis of open‑source information and the streamlining of processes.
Participate in meetings to brief recipients on the results of open‑source information analysis.
Required Expertise
Database interrogation – expertise in using a range of open‑source databases and tools, including identifying and evaluating relevant sources for further analysis.
Information collection and analysis – proven ability to collect and evaluate technical information from a range of open sources and to prepare analytical inputs for reports and communications.
Qualifications, Experience And Language Skills
Bachelor’s Degree – university degree in science, technology, international relations, communications or fields relevant to non‑proliferation studies.
Minimum of two years of experience in conducting open‑source information collection and analysis on technical subjects or in conducting nuclear research.
Experience using advanced text retrieval techniques and complex databases for information collection, processing and analysis.
Experience preparing analytical content for products or reports, with the ability to respond rapidly to new information requirements.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax‑free annual net base salary starting at
US $56,046
(subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment currently amounting to
US $29,144 *, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses. Other benefits include six weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
