Organizational Setting The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material. The Transport Safety Unit is responsible for establishing and maintaining safety standards related to the worldwide safe transport of radioactive material, providing technical cooperation, training, and maintaining relevant databases.
Role The Innovative Nuclear Technology Transport Safety Specialist reports to the Unit Head and is responsible for implementing activities related to the safe transport of radioactive material and advanced nuclear technologies. The role comprises three main functions:
Substantive expert:
develops and reviews international safety standards and guidance.
Adviser:
works with Member States and international organisations to improve safe transport practices.
Technical officer:
implements complex, multidisciplinary technical assistance projects and facilitates policy discussions.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Develop, review, and revise safety standards and technical documents, ensuring they reflect international consensus and state‑of‑the‑art knowledge.
Provide advice to Member States and other international organisations on safe transport to achieve harmonised application of regulations.
Strengthen forums to raise awareness of topical safe transport issues.
Plan, organise, and lead complex technical meetings in the field of Transport Safety.

Required Expertise
Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety:
application of safety standards, particularly for spent fuel, high‑level waste, and advanced fuel transport packages.
Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety:
development of IAEA Safety Standards, knowledge of IAEA Safety Standard development processes.
Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety:
education and training in transport safety, demonstrated ability in design and delivery of training.
Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety:
knowledge of international transport regulations and related conventions, laws, and treaties.
Regulatory Experience:
implementation of safe transport regulatory core processes and participation in international peer reviews.
Qualifications, Experience And Language Skills
Advanced university degree in nuclear science, technology, engineering or related discipline, or a first‑level degree plus two years of relevant experience.
Minimum seven years of experience in safety assessments related to transport of radioactive material or nuclear power plants.
Demonstrable participation in the development and/or application of IAEA safety standards related to transport and nuclear installations.
Ability to prepare high‑quality, technically accurate documents.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with IAEA staff and Member States.
Ability to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Excellent oral and written command of English; knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish is an asset.
Remuneration The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax‑free annual net base salary starting at
US $86,027 , a variable post adjustment of
US $44,820 *, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, and relocation and repatriation expenses. Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, a pension plan and health insurance.
