Organizational Setting The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements IAEA Major Programme 2, “Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection,” which comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.
The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. The Division supports Member States in production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilisation; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion; and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.
Additionally, nuclear science activities carried out by the Nuclear Data Section and Physics Section in the Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences fall under Major Programme 1.
The Nuclear Data Section (NDS) is primarily responsible for generating and maintaining high‑quality fundamental nuclear and atomic databases and providing services worldwide. Its main dissemination channel is the NDS website, which offers interactive tools for data presentation.
Main Purpose The Unit Head leads a team of physicists and support staff in nuclear data activities, develops international guidelines, assists Member States to enhance the peaceful use of technology in fission and fusion energy technologies and non‑energy applications (such as medical isotopes), develops and implements new programmes on training, and provides technical assistance at the request of Member States. The Unit Head reports to the Head of the Nuclear Data Section.
Role Overview 1. Programme developer and implementer – planning and developing nuclear databases to support nuclear energy and non‑energy research worldwide.
2. Scientific secretary/technical expert – planning and leading complex technical meetings.
3. Project officer – promoting, coordinating and evaluating complex Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) and data development projects to promote high‑quality nuclear databases for nuclear energy and non‑energy research.
Functions / Key Results Expected • Oversee and manage staff and activities of the Nuclear Data Development Unit, providing authoritative leadership and technical input to reports and databases.
• Support the Section Head in planning and monitoring the programme and budget.

• Identify critical needs for improved numerical nuclear physics data in nuclear technology applications.
• Promote, coordinate and evaluate complex CRPs and conduct related studies.
• Lead the International Nuclear Data Evaluation Network (INDEN) through collaboration of Member States on the evaluation of nuclear reaction data libraries.
• Develop international recommendations on development and derivation of nuclear databases to address specific needs of Member States, planning and leading complex technical meetings.
• Work closely with technical departments within IAEA, institutions in Member States and other international organisations to ensure effective implementation of fission, fusion and other nuclear data.
• Plan, organise and conduct training for complex technical topics.
• Provide authoritative guidance and technical input to the preparation of reports by staff.
