The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.

Your role

The Obstetrician-Gynecologist, as part of an ICRC hospital team, provides safe care and emergency/elective surgical procedures for obstetrics & gynecology cases. He/she works in assisted or ICRC independent hospital structures, regularly in limited resources settings and challenging security environment. He is the technical referent for all in and out-patient Obstetrics and Gynecology related matters.

Main responsibilities

  • Provides and supervises Obstetrics and Gynecology care and surgical procedures, in line with the internationally/ICRC recognized standards, on evidence-based practices, and ensures adequate patient post-operative follow-up.
  • Responsible for the clinical management of obstetrics and Gynecology for in and out-patient within the hospital, including compliance to the admission criteria.
  • Ensures precise, clear and timely medical documentation.
  • Ensures that all required resources are available to conduct safe care and related surgical procedures.
  • In collaboration with the other members of the ICRC hospital team, provides technical advice and supports local counterparts to maintain/develop the local capacities and maintain/reach international standards.
  • Contributes reviews the contingency plan and other plans of action for the hospital in collaboration with the hospital management team and (sub)-delegation.
  • Consults with Health Unit in Geneva in case of exceedingly difficult cases warranting a second opinion.
  • Always being conscious of the limitations (human & material resources) and seeks advice when required.

Education and experience required

  • Valid license to practice in your country of residence.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience post certification.
  • ATLS certification or ATLS refresher course, dated less than 5 years.
  • Previous international humanitarian and/or development experience in low-income countries (NGOs, IO or charity organization) is an asset.
  • Previous experience(s) within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement is an asset.

Desired profile and skills

  • Fluency in English (C1) and a good command of a second language is a strong asset (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian).
  • Good command of computer tools (Windows 8, Lotus Notes…).
  • Comfortable performing Obstetrics and Gynecology surgical procedures, particularly cesarean section, with limited resources.
  • Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in complex environments.
  • Good organizational skills, capacity to manage and work within a team.
  • Able to develop and supervise local surgical staff.
  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work.
  • Sensitivity to cultural, ethnic and gender diversity.
  • Positive, flexible and able to adapt him/herself to harsh living conditions and/or unstable security environment.

Our operational context

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals.
  • Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field.
  • Candidates must possess a driving license (for manual transmission vehicles) with practice.
  • Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents).
