The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the world’s leading international think tank providing independent and objective information and analysis on military, geopolitical and geo-economic developments that could lead to conflict. It is headquartered in London with offices in Bahrain, Berlin, Singapore, and Washington D.C.

The Institute seeks to appoint a Research Associate to work for the China Programme located in London. This position will contribute to IISS original research on Chinese (traditional and non-traditional) security and defence issues. The position will also assist the IISS Senior Fellow and China Programme Head with organisational and implementation duties regarding ongoing and future project work.

Responsibilities

  • Research into the security and defence of China with a focus on traditional and non-traditional security activities and Chinese foreign policy.
  • Outputs will include IISS publications, blogs, data visualisation projects, and contribution to longer studies.
  • Taking a lead role where China research and consultancy projects require data or analysis. Engage in original research, produce research papers and present findings to government, academia, media and industry.
  • Contributing to fundraising activities, including developing ideas and concept notes for research projects, writing fundraising proposals, developing a network and assisting in identifying sources of financial support for the programme.
  • Contributing to IISS conferences, workshops and other events as required. Activities may include chairing panels, contributing to panel sessions, and working with speakers to develop content.

Requirements

  • Master’s or other postgraduate degree in Chinese studies, or security and defence studies with a particular geographic focus on China.
  • Proven work experience in a think tank, academia or government is required.
  • Proven experience, preferably in an international environment, working on international security-related issues.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and proficient in Mandarin.
  • Computer literacy with excellent Microsoft skills.
  • Ability to collaborate well with a wide range of people both in person and remotely across time-zones.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks.

Remuneration
