Project Context and Scope

The assignment focuses on improving the usability, navigation, content discovery, visual design, and search experience of an existing Drupal portal.

The UI/UX Designer is expected to understand the Drupal ecosystem and design interfaces that are practical to implement using Drupal content types, fields, taxonomies, menus, blocks, Views, Paragraphs, Layout Builder, and reusable components.

• The Scope Includes Designing And Improving
• Landing pages, listing pages, detail pages, search pages, and content-heavy templates.
• Reusable Drupal-friendly components such as cards, teasers, banners, filters, blocks, accordions, tabs, listings, and CTAs.
• Responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile.
• Accessible and SEO-friendly UI structures, including clear content hierarchy, crawlable navigation, optimized headings, and user-friendly layouts.
• Faceted full-text search experiences using technologies such as Apache Solr, Search API, Search Stax, or similar tools.

The User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) Designer Consultant will work closely with Drupal developers, content editors, product owners, and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the proposed designs are feasible, user-centered, and aligned with technical requirements.

Organizational Department / Unit to which the Consultant is contributing

The User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) Designer Consultant will work under the direction of Department of Humanitarian Response and Recovery (DHRR), mainly the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) unit.

Responsibilities

Category B Consultants: Tangible and measurable outputs of the work assignment / Tasks to be performed under this contract and to be paid in three instalments and are subject to DTM verification.

• Drupal Website UX Review (1week)
• Review the existing Drupal site structure, content types, navigation, page templates, and search experience.
• Identify usability, accessibility, navigation, content discovery, and design issues.
• Assess Drupal implementation constraints in coordination with the technical team.
• Stakeholder Consultation and Portal Assessment (1week) (First instalment)
• Conduct interviews, surveys, discussions, or workshops with relevant stakeholders.
• Consult internal users, content editors, technical teams, management, and selected external users where applicable.
• Identify current portal shortcomings, user needs, pain points, and improvement opportunities.
• Provide prioritized recommendations for portal redesign or enhancement.
• Information Architecture and User Experience Design (3weeks)
• Propose improvements to the site structure, navigation, content hierarchy, and user journeys.
• Develop wireframes for key templates and user flows.
• Design reusable page components suitable for Drupal implementation.
• Design user-friendly search pages, faceted filters, search result listings, sorting options, and active filter states.
• Include mobile-friendly filter panels, no-results pages, pagination or infinite scroll patterns, metadata display, and clear-filter interactions.
• Ensure the search experience is accessible, clear, and efficient for users.
• Visual Design and Prototyping (2weeks) (Second instalment)
• Prepare low-fidelity and high-fidelity UI designs using Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar tools.
• Create responsive designs for key templates across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
• Develop a design system or UI kit including typography, colors, spacing, buttons, forms, cards, icons, and reusable components.
• Deliverables review, handover and Implementation Support (1week) (Third and final instalment upon completion of all services)
• Stakeholders reviewing the deliverables for final signoff
• Provide developer-ready design specifications, assets, annotations, and component states.
• Ensure designs can be translated into Drupal themes, templates, Views, blocks, and reusable components.
• Review implemented pages and provide feedback before final acceptance.
• Performance indicators for the evaluation of results
• Quality and completeness of the UX review and stakeholder consultation findings.
• Clarity and practicality of recommendations for improving the Drupal portal.
• Quality of information architecture, user flows, wireframes, and prototypes.
• Usability, accessibility, responsiveness, and SEO-friendliness of the proposed UI designs.
• Quality of the faceted full-text search design, including filters, results display, sorting, mobile behavior, and empty states.
• Alignment of designs with Drupal implementation requirements.
• Quality and completeness of the design system, UI kit, and developer handover package.
• Timely delivery of agreed outputs.
• Responsiveness to feedback from stakeholders, developers, and project owners.

Qualifications

Education

• Minimum Required Education
• Interaction Design or User Experience Design;
• Graphic Design or Visual Communication;
• Human-Computer Interaction (HCI);
• Computer Science or Information Technology with a design focus;
• Digital Media or Multimedia Design;
• Web Design or Digital Communications; or,
• Information Architecture.

Desirable / Advantageous

• A Master's degree in any of the above fields, or specifically in

• Human-Computer Interaction (HCI);
• User Experience Design; or,
• Information Systems.

Experience

• Minimum 5 years of professional UI/UX design experience.
• Proven experience designing websites, portals, or digital platforms built with Drupal.
• Experience designing faceted search, full-text search, advanced filtering, or data discovery interfaces.
• Experience in preparing developer-ready design handover packages.

Skills

• Demonstrated understanding of CMS-based design and component-based page structures.
• Familiarity with Drupal content types, fields, taxonomies, menus, blocks, Views, Paragraphs, Layout Builder, or similar approaches.
• Demonstrated knowledge of responsive web design and mobile-first design principles.
• Demonstrated knowledge of accessibility standards, preferably WCAG 2.1 or later.
• Ability to design SEO-friendly user interfaces with clear content hierarchy and crawlable navigation.
• Proficiency in Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar design tools.
• Ability to translate user requirements and technical constraints into clear, usable, and implementable designs.
• Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this consultancy, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
