Organizational Context and Scope The Department of Media and Communications (DMC) is comprised of experienced communications professionals based in Geneva and Manila. The Department provides advice and support on media and public information issues to the Executive Office, Offices, Departments and Divisions at Headquarters (HQ), Regional Offices (ROs), and Country Offices (Cos) worldwide. It is responsible for global media relations, crisis management and advocacy, and produces a variety of online and offline content to enhance awareness of IOM, its operations, policies and data among diverse audiences. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Multimedia, DMC in Headquarters Geneva, the Multimedia Officer will be responsible for the provision of reporting and visibility support to country missions as well as HQ through the generation of multimedia content promoting flagship campaigns and IOM’s operational programmes in the field.
Responsibilities
Produce high‑quality multi‑media content including photography and videography capturing IOM's activities, events, and projects.
Support the development of creative and impactful multimedia content and storytelling initiatives that contribute to IOM’s strategic communications objectives, enhance institutional visibility, amplify programme results, and foster engagement across digital, media, donor, and public audiences globally.
Collaborate with Regional and Country Offices worldwide to highlight ongoing projects and achievements through visually engaging audiovisual content that supports the strategic positioning of IOM with key stakeholders, government entities, civil society, partners, and the general public.
Provide editorial guidance, quality assurance, and specialised multimedia training to regional and country offices, in audiovisual production to ensure compliance with IOM branding, ethical storytelling standards, informed consent requirements, and multimedia best practices.
Provide specialised technical support to departments and divisions at HQ, including Private‑Sector Partnerships, in developing multimedia products targeting internal and external stakeholders.
Support the Executive Office in developing high‑quality multimedia content for strategic communications, public engagement, advocacy, and high‑level events.
In close coordination with the Head of Multimedia, manage the multimedia studio for both live and recorded productions, supporting video recording when necessary, including researching, writing scripts, booking guests, and selecting video material to enhance coverage of IOM’s work.
Support the curation, metadata management, and quality control of the IOM Media Library, ensuring audiovisual assets remain accessible, searchable, properly consented, and aligned with organisational standards.
Monitor emerging trends, technologies, and innovative approaches in multimedia storytelling, digital content production, AI‑assisted workflows, and audience engagement, recommending improvements where appropriate.
Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Education
Master’s degree in Journalism, Media or Communications or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or
Bachelor’s degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
Experience as a professional photographer and/or videographer working on assignments on location;
Experience with documenting humanitarian programme activities including emergency operations;
Experience working in teams;
Experience in script and copy writing and developing detailed and informative multimedia products for multiple stakeholders;
Experience in livestreaming and event management;
Experience in coordinating, organising, and carrying out field visits;
Writing and editing experience in reporting and public information, in emergency contexts.
Skills
Familiarity with international organisations, humanitarian framework at field and global levels;
Familiarity with emerging and innovative multimedia technologies, including AI‑assisted content creation, editing, transcription, translation, and asset management tools;
Knowledge of ethical storytelling principles, safeguarding considerations, informed consent procedures, and protection‑sensitive communications;
Demonstrated understanding of digital communications, audience engagement, and multimedia content distribution strategies;
In‑depth knowledge of photography, videography, script writing, and storytelling;
Understanding of visual communication, graphic design principles, editorial production, and multimedia storytelling;
Demonstrated project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple productions simultaneously and meet tight deadlines;
Knowledge of editing and latest developments in digital production with strong expertise in essential multimedia software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign;
Demonstrated expertise in interviewing and reporting;
Familiarity with motion graphics, 3D animation and/or other moving image techniques is desirable;
Ability to make effective decisions, balancing creative expectations with production time and budget for an increasingly mobile audience;
Knowledge of IOM's mandate and programme of activities;
Demonstrated teamwork, coordination, and relationship‑management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments, field offices, and external partners;
Demonstrated ability to provide guidance and knowledge‑sharing to colleagues across the Organisation;
Ability to work effectively and respectfully in diverse, multicultural, and multidisciplinary environments, demonstrating professionalism, inclusivity, and a commitment to gender equality and non‑discrimination;
Ability to guide and advise staff and coordinate on improving reporting capacity and skills.
Languages IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages. For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic is an advantage. Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
