IQM has over 300 employees with offices in Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Singapore, and the US.

We are seeking a highly experienced

Senior or Staff Quantum Engineer to join our Gates team in Espoo, Finland, or Munich, Germany.

We are looking for candidates with a deep understanding of quantum gate control, a proactive mindset, and research leadership experience.

You’ll be shaping the research and development on quantum gate implementations for our superconducting quantum processors.

You will actively develop the scientific vision of the team and drive the technological planning to enable the delivery of highly performant quantum processor units (QPUs) as well as to meet the goals of the technological roadmap of IQM.

What will I be doing?

  • Developing and implementing benchmarking and characterization methods for single‑and two‑qubit gates.
  • Analyzing gate fidelities and addressing their physical limitations.
  • Collaborating across design, fabrication, software, and theory teams to boost QPU performance.
  • Contributing to efforts toward full quantum error correction.
  • Mentoring junior team members and leading initiatives in technical focus areas.
  • Contributing to roadmap development and R&D planning activities.
  • Driving and leading initiatives that boost the performance of upcoming QPU generations.

What skills do I need?

  • Proven knowledge of gate‑based quantum computation.
  • Experimental experience with superconducting quantum bits.
  • Python development experience (ideally in a quantum control framework).
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Independent problem‑solving abilities and drive to contribute to large‑scale R&D.
  • Demonstrated R&D track record substantiated by earlier patents, publications, or presentations in quantum technologies.
  • Research mentoring and leadership experience in either an academic or industrial setting.

Nice to have skills

  • Experience with version control and collaborative software development.
  • Experimental experience with calibration automation or quantum processor benchmarking.
  • Good written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Self‑driven personality comfortable in a team‑oriented collaborative environment.

Education/Experience

Ph D in Physics, Quantum Technologies, or a related technical field, or similar level of experience after an MSc in the same technical fields.

Senior Quantum Engineer

Minimum 3+ years post‑Ph D experience.

Staff Quantum Engineer

Minimum 5+ years post‑Ph D experience

What can I expect from IQM?

  • Contribute to world‑class quantum projects.

You will be directly shaping and implementing gate control, benchmarking, and characterization of single‑and two‑qubit gates for IQM’s superconducting quantum processors.

  • Thrive in a creative and open start‑up environment that fosters growth, learning, and innovation.
  • Be part of a truly international and interdisciplinary team.

You will collaborate with experts across design, fabrication, software, and hardware and across offices in multiple countries, contributing to a diverse and globally connected quantum community.

  • Have a meaningful impact.

As a senior/staff‑level engineer, you will lead technical initiatives, mentor junior team members, and help steer IQM’s future quantum‑processor generations.
