Project background
The Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) Group at ETH Zürich, led by Prof. Dr. André Bardow, is pursuing the ERC Advanced Grant DISC3Lab to devise a validated discovery loop for sustainable chemical processes, targeting the solvent‑based recycling of plastics. The project focuses on developing a Thermodynamic & Process Lab‑on‑a‑chip and an automated small‑scale experimental platform for high‑throughput measurement of fluid properties relevant to recycling processes. Job description
Your main task will be designing, setting up, and performing novel experiments using microfluidics, spectroscopy, and algorithm‑driven lab automation to enable closed‑loop, self‑optimizing experiments. Initial experiments will investigate phase equilibria and transport processes in liquid mixtures. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with a fellow doctoral candidate focused on predictive simulation methods. You will mentor and co‑supervise student projects and theses. You will engage in various group and institute duties and activities. As a core part of your role, you will publish your results in peer‑reviewed journals and present them at international conferences. Profile
You meet the requirements for a doctoral program at ETH Zurich and hold an excellent Master’s or diploma in chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, energy science & technology, physical chemistry, or a related field. Ideally, you have experience setting up experiments and using microfluidics and spectroscopy. You are interested in developing model‑based methods for experimental design and analysis and are highly motivated to learn and apply modern experimental and simulation techniques. You can work independently and communicate effectively in English (excellent writing skills). Workplace
The PhD position is full‑time and fixed‑term, starting upon agreement with the earliest available date of October 1, 2026. You will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of researchers working collaboratively with research and industry partners. We offer
Access to state‑of‑the‑art laboratory facilities and experimental set‑ups; opportunities for professional and personal growth; support for critical thinking, data analysis, problem‑solving, and project management; contribution to the academic community through publications and presentations at leading conferences. Equal Opportunities and Diversity
ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture, promotes equality of opportunity, values diversity, and nurtures a working and learning environment that respects the rights and dignity of all staff and students. Sustainability is a core value and we are consistently working towards a climate‑neutral future.
