  • Manage peer review and editorial aspects of the journal

  • Oversee the editorial support vendor and ensure adherence to peer review and production protocols

  • Manage solicited content for CANCER from acquisition to submission

  • Manage revenue-generating supplements and special issues from proposal to online publication

  • Guide authors, agencies, and funders through publication processes

  • Work with the CANCER Editor-in-Chief on letters to the editor and decision appeals

  • Track and analyze peer review, production/publication, competition, and other data

  • Calculate semiannual Editor honoraria payments

  • Compile reports for annual, quarterly, and ad hoc meetings

  • Make recommendations and implement changes based on data analysis

  • Manage and triage communications received by the CANCER Editorial Office

  • Collect annual conflict of interest disclosures from Editorial Board members

  • Copyedit and proofread critical materials

  • Monitor journal online platforms and provide feedback to the publisher

  • Review manuscript data and reports to maintain a steady content pipeline

  • Conduct monthly content strategy meetings

  • Implement publisher-enforced process changes

  • Screen submitted images for inappropriate manipulation

  • Lead journal user engagement efforts with the Research Engagement Manager, including short-form video, podcasts, infographics, and visual abstracts

  • Provide operational and administrative support, including invoices, honoraria, contract payments, correspondence, and group calendars

  • Organize and manage logistics, travel arrangements, and communications for journal annual meetings


Requirements



  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with web-based peer review systems, peer review processes, and editorial procedures for a scholarly journal

  • Experience dealing with scientific researchers or physicians

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound, autonomous decisions

  • Skill with analyzing and reporting quantitative and qualitative data

  • Ability to distill complex or technical information and find major points of interest to a given audience

  • Persistent, flexible, resourceful, deadline- and detail-oriented

  • Ability to provide tactful and effective customer service

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills

  • Ability to learn new computer programs quickly

  • Proven organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to represent ACS at conferences and other events

  • Preferred: 1-2 years’ experience working with digital artwork and editing video in Adobe Creative Cloud for social media

  • Preferred: Understanding of publication embargoes and press releases

  • Preferred: Comfortable presenting to large groups including leadership-level individuals

  • Preferred: Familiarity with current issues and trends in scholarly publishing

  • Preferred: Experience proofreading and familiarity with AMA Manual of Style and AP Stylebook

  • Preferred: Experience training staff
