Senior Scientist / Engineer – Transplantation, Biopreservation, Bioengineering

  • Support the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) across transplantation, organ and tissue preservation, engineered tissues, organoids, microphysiological systems, and advanced therapeutic manufacturing
  • Collaborate with the ARPA-H Program Manager and team to develop, fund, and manage R&D programs
  • Provide direct technical support to R&D performer teams, Government Program Managers, and health innovation stakeholders
  • Apply expertise in transplantation and regenerative medicine to emerging technologies, clinical workflows, manufacturability, regulatory constraints, and implementation
  • Provide technical and strategic support for tissue and organoid manufacturing, organ-on-chip platforms, biopreservation, ex vivo organ perfusion, diagnostics, and translational technologies
  • Evaluate technologies against clinical and operational realities, including organ recovery, preservation logistics, cold-chain constraints, perfusion assessment, and transplant-center workflow
  • Conduct landscape analyses and technical diligence on emerging capabilities, vendors, performers, and scientific trends
  • Assess commercialization pathways, scale-up, manufacturability, quality systems, GMP, regulatory strategy, reimbursement, supply chain, and clinical adoption barriers
  • Review technical proposals, performer submissions, milestones, deliverables, and program risks
  • Organize reviewer comments and draft recommendations, project summaries, and presentation materials
  • Identify subject‑matter experts, potential performers, test and evaluation partners, and transition stakeholders
  • Assist with program management, technical meetings, site visits, performer progress tracking, schedule risk identification, and briefing materials
  • Maintain awareness of scientific, clinical, regulatory, and market developments
  • Interface directly with Government Program Manager, Mission Office leadership, performer teams, and external stakeholders

Requirements

  • PhD in physiology, systems biology, bioengineering, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, or a related discipline; or MD with significant experience in transplantation, organ preservation, transplant surgery, transplant medicine, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated subject‑matter expertise in organ preservation, ex vivo organ perfusion and diagnostics, transplant biology, regenerative medicine, or translational bioengineering
  • Ability to critically evaluate technical data, experimental plans, and development pathways
  • Experience synthesizing complex scientific information into concise written and visual products
  • Experience supporting complex R&D efforts involving academic, clinical, and/or industrial stakeholders
  • Ability to translate between basic science, engineering development, and clinical or transplant operational realities
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritize work, and remain highly detail-oriented, organized, and proactive
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency required
  • Active federal government Public Trust, or ability to obtain one
  • At least one year of experience supporting DARPA or related federal ARPA agencies
  • Experience supporting a federal or commercial health agency or organization
  • Knowledge of the biomedical research landscape
  • Two or more years of experience in federal healthcare and/or scientific consulting
  • Additional experience in transplantation, organ perfusion, biopreservation, engineered tissues, organoids, organ‑on‑chip/MPS, biofabrication, advanced therapeutic manufacturing, translational commercialization, regulatory strategy, quality systems, reimbursement, and clinical adoption barriers
