- Provide strategic direction and insight for the underwriting organization for an assigned line of business
- Lead and coordinate strategy, execution, and oversight of complex products and programs at the enterprise level
- Establish and communicate underwriting guidance and best practices across the organization
- Serve as a senior technical expert, consultant, and mentor within Corporate Underwriting
- Support complex line-of-business inquiries
- Lead team workload, performance, and development while partnering with regional offices
- Influence business decisions through recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences
- Contribute to companywide strategic initiatives with Field and Corporate Underwriting leadership
- Own strategy, execution, administration, and development of the assigned line of business
- Serve as enterprise subject matter expert and oversee implementation of strategies, products, and programs
- Develop short- and long-term product and underwriting strategies aligned with growth and profitability objectives
- Oversee profit and loss and maintain the line-of-business business plan
- Evaluate premium, loss, and underwriting data and identify performance trends
- Develop and communicate underwriting standards, tools, and best practices
- Develop new products and coverage language and oversee innovations and implementation
- Assess market opportunities and product initiatives and recommend profitable-growth improvements
- Provide rate-review analysis and actionable recommendations to regional offices and business units
- Oversee proprietary and bureau rules, rates, forms, endorsements, and statistical coding
- Evaluate regulatory impacts, prepare filings, and coordinate implementation
- Advise on underwriting philosophy, risk acceptability, forms, rating, and risk management
- Handle complex referrals, support authorizations, and determine/place facultative reinsurance
- Lead special projects and partner with internal and external stakeholders
- Develop and deliver training, workshops, and thought leadership content
- Manage team performance, hiring, compensation, development, succession planning, DEI, innovation, and department budget
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an insurance or business-related field, or equivalent relevant experience
- Ten years of experience with commercial property and casualty underwriting, including at least five years of commercial staff underwriting experience within applicable line of business
- Insurance certifications, such as CPCU, AU or CIC
- Previous people leadership experience
- Superior knowledge of countrywide underwriting techniques, terminology, policies, products, and forms
- Exceptional underwriting judgment and decision-making skills
- Strong knowledge of key performance indicators (KPIs) and ways to improve them
- Proficiency with computer software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Superior organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities
- Excellent presentation, communication, and leadership skills
- Ability to advise, partner, influence, and consult with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including senior leaders, executives, and project owners

- Ability to translate technical ideas into general terms for business customers
- Occasional travel required
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving
