The Department of Synthetic Biophysics headed by Prof. Dr. Edward A. Lemke is located in the Department of Biology and associated with the Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Molecular Physiology. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a PhD and excellent knowledge of organic chemistry who will further develop the research area of biophysical chemistry within the working group (

Your tasks:

  • Extensive involvement in university teaching in Bachelor’s and Master’s modules, as well as in teacher education
  • Supervision of doctorates, Master’s and Bachelor’s theses
  • Integration into the existing working group of the AG Lemke with focus on biophysical chemistry studies of disordered proteins
  • Establishment and management of the organic chemistry laboratory and synthetic biology
  • Collaboration in research and international publications, as well as acquisition of third-party funds
  • Taking on interdisciplinary research projects and combining tools and research approaches from organic chemistry with those from cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics.

Your profile:

You are a highly motivated scientist with a doctorate in the field of organic chemistry, who will habilitate in biology within the probationary period of 3 years and achieve promotion to “Akademischer Oberrat”.
Your previous publication record indicates that you will be able to achieve publications in recognized scientific journals with a cumulative impact factor of 200 points in a leading position (first author) within 3 years.

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act:

  • A successfully completed scientific university degree in Chemistry
  • Generally, a doctorate in a field relevant to the position in Chemistry
  • Post-graduation full-time work experience of at least 2.5 years
  • Relevant experience
    • in the synthesis of unnatural amino acids
    • in the synthesis of fluorescent dyes suitable for single molecule biophysics
    • in the synthesis of small molecules for the modification of nuclear transport
  • Proven international research experience, as well as success in acquiring third-party funding
  • Experience and a high level of enthusiasm for biophysical fluorescence methods
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English
  • A strong track record validated by publications in using the common methods in a molecular/cell biology laboratory (cloning, cell culture, protein purification, etc.)

The following are also desirable:

  • Extensive teaching experience in various educational systems
  • Skills in organometallics and stereoselective synthesis
  • Skills with RET assays and systems biology techniques such as peptide fingerprinting mass spectrometry

If the legal requirements for civil servants are not (or not yet) met, employment as an academic member of staff (EG 13 TV-L) may be possible.
