PhD student for numerical modelling of mass transfer in fluidised beds (must hold a Diploma/Master's degree - FlexCSAR) for a full-time, three-year position Organizational unit: Department of Particulate Flow Modelling Entry date: 12/01/2026 Term from 12/01/2026 Temporary employment to: 11/30/2029 Job Reference Number: 36010-2026-002094 We have an opening for a PhD student researcher to join a cutting-edge research project conducted within an European consortium of research and industrial institutions about carbon caputure using fluidised bed technology. The project focuses on the numerical modelling of the hydrodynamics of fluidized beds including heat and mass transfer. However, common CFD-models require sufficiently fine numerical grids to resolve all relevant heterogeneous structures such as bubbles which requires excessive computational resources to research industrial scale processes. To overcome these severe limitations, we have recently proposed a novel numerical method following single phase turbulence theory. Similar to single phase turbulence models it allows much coarser gird resolutions resulting in speed-ups of two orders of magnitude and more. The focus of this position is to further develop this theory for reactive gas-particle flows, which is essential for the carbon capture process. The selected PhD student will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of experienced researchers, closely collaborating with a PostDoc focus on the collective motion of particulate flows. PhD researcher position in the field of modelling of gas particle flows for a full-time, three-year-position at the Department of Particulate Flow Modelling for the projects "FlexCSAR" within the framework of the European CEPT partnership. The candidate must have a completed Master-equivalent degree in Fluid Mechanics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics Solid background in one or more of the following areas: turbulence modelling, CFD, multiphase flows, fluidised beds, mathematics Ability to work both independently and in a team Fluency in English (level C1), no knowledge of German require What We Offer:
